A good mindless read

I was hooked on the series from the first "episode" so there was no question I would read this one. This book had a happy ending so I enjoyed it. If you're looking for a mindless form of entertainment (think "beach book"), then I think you'll like this one. I would even entertain the idea of reading more from these authors, particularly if they wanted to follow Callie into her sophomore year at Harvard. (One more thing: this is more of a "girl" book so I don't think any of you male readers would enjoy it very much.)

Wonderful, Fun Book! I love all the characters!

I really loved this book! The person or people trying to take Callie down are disclosed in this book and it was great to find out. The friendships between Callie and her roommates Vanessa, MiMi, and Dana grew in this book with no issues between them and it was nice to see them all band together.

The across the hall guys Matt, OK, and Adam were still the same fun loving guys. I missed that Gregory wasn't in the book as often and it made sense with how everything played out.

It couldn't have been a better ending. But I still want more since I love all these characters so much and the story was great!

Well I was so excited to finally get to the last book. The Hangover chapter was hysterical. I was laughing my ass off. I will say (spoiler) that the fact that Gregory is not in most of it was a true disappointment. I wished for more of him and Callie. The entire series was fantastic so many characters and you feell like you know them all. These authors together are magic and their writing in exceptional.
Five star review if Gregory was in it more.

The present as window on the past

Bell compares modern descriptions of anorexia nervosa with the recorded behavior of some of the best-known Italian female saints from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. He argues that Clare of Assisi, Catherine of Siena, and other holy women were not only victims of a disease, but also in a way victims of a medieval Christian culture which allowed young women no other way to experience the disease's effects than as symptoms of religious fervor.
Bell's attitude toward his sources is capricious - sometimes he treats his medieval sources as literal truth, sometimes as distorted, agenda-ridden hagiography. They are, undoubtedly, a bit of both. Nonetheless, it is obvious that these holy women were more likely than their male counterparts to practice ascetic - even bizarre - food rituals in lieu or excess of other ascetic behavior. In this respect, Bell's book necessarily suffers in comparison with Caroline Walker Bynum's _Holy Feast and Holy Fast: The Religious Significance of Food to Medieval Women_, for Bynum spends a great more deal of time considering the phenomenon of female fasting in the both its broad medieval and specific Christian contexts. Still, Bell's argument for a connection between the rise of "holy anorexia" and the development of the mendicant orders is an intriguing bit of historical cause and effect.
Bell's methodology suggests that the "bizarre" behavior of women so removed from our own time is actually very familiar. While the argument itself falls flat at times, he does shed new light on an issue which could otherwise too easily be dismissed as spiritual excess.

Wonderful piece of history

Bell compiles some wonderful information about the topic of anorexia among Catholic saints. I have given it five stars simply for the work that went into compiling this informative piece of work. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This book is an excellent historic study of women possesed with piety, most of these women were nuns from the 14-15th century. They expressed a dedication to Christ through an aesthetic lifestyle that included starvation, self-inflicted torture, mystical hallucinations and extreme self-denial. The women who starved to death gained a martyr like status. A facinating book!

The Color of Her Panties=Funny

I just finished this book and I think it was really great. I enjoyed reading it and stayed up past my bedtime to read it. It was very funny and I thought it had a good plot. Sometimes you have a strong feeling about what was going to happen before it happens and I found that when it does happen, it is like a great surprise. It also made my think. I couldn't put it down it was so good. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I really liked the books Man From Mundania and Question Quest just a little bit better. It is very funny, as Piers Anthony always is, and the demoness Metria is so funny. She is also one of my favorite characters. I loved all the characters! To put it simple, it was just GREAT!

In writing Power-Up, I wanted to take what I had learned about Japanese art and culture and apply it to the video games that I had grown up loving so much, in an attempt to explain why Japan had been so successful throughout the world, from such an early point in gaming history.�
I wrote this book while living in Kyoto, Japan, just a few minutes' walk down the road from the original Nintendo Playing Cards building. It's a snapshot of that year of my life, as well as a history and profile of Japanese games from Super Mario�to Final Fantasy to Ico.�
For the revised 2016 edition available from Dover Publications, I wrote the only thing that seemed appropriate: an all-new chapter paying tribute to the life and work of Nintendo's late president Satoru Iwata.

Too short and too shallow, but basically worthwhile

I enjoyed this book, mostly. Within its scattershot set of chapters about Japanese games in general, there's a fascinating, albeit sketchy, history of Nintendo that contained many small revelations for me, despite that I've been playing video games incessantly since 1987 or so. But the rest of the material was less compelling for me. The chapter about music games and music in games actively frustrated me--it gave only a brief survey of either topic, and seemed to spend most of its words on a tedious, obsessive examination of Final Fantasy albums. A chapter about Akihabara, Japan's premier consumer electronics marketplace, pushed the trivia-to-insight ratio similarly high. In his effort to treat video games as if they deserve the attention of artists, Kohler concentrates too much on material that is only interesting to fans.

Still, on the whole I'm glad I read this book, and I hope Kohler's stated desire to encourage further such works is satisfied; there is clearly much more to say.

Something about Japan by someone who understands Japan

Kohler has done a very, very good job of surveying the Japanese video game industry.
Unlike other writers who have written game histories, Kohler speaks Japanese and lived in Japan. He covered the Japanese video game market for international publications. Frankly, the depth of his understanding shows throughout this book.
Kohler's interviews are direct and insightful. He managed to get access to many of Japan's leading game designers. As somebody who has read many books about the video game industry, I noticed that Kohler's knowledge of the Japanese language resulted in a more direct style of interview.
Kohler managed to get his hands on the creators of such games as ICO, Parapa, and, of course, Mario.
One thing I will say about "Power-Up" is that it is a specialized book. If you are looking for a general survey of gaming, or a picture book with glossy full-color art, this is not the book. This is NOT a book for folks who want to read about the games they played as kids.
"Power-Up" is a highly-specialized book. I believe that it belongs on the top shelf of ANY collector who considers himself/herself a serious student of video games. This is a resource, like Lenny Herman's "Phoenix," that will be appreciated by hardcore gamers for a very long time.

Sweet Story and Big Colorful Pop-ups

Nice birthday story about Teddy's search for his big birthday surprise which moves along with the clues found in the lift-the-flaps and envelopes accompanied by colorful, beautifully illustrated pop-ups. The copy is good, with lots of action verbs which might be new to young readers/listeners - helps build vocabulary.

Very sweet story but not very substantive.

This story is mainly about Beth, who separates from her husband after he has an affair, and deals with living alone and finding her own success, but also deals with her relationship with Adam and his illegitimate son from an earlier affair, Noah. Noah’s terminal illness is what propels this book forward, but it isn’t introduced until the second of three parts of this book. Because of this, the first part was boring as there was no real reason to keep reading it. Noah’s story was what brought this book depth.

Beth and Adam’s voices seem very similar and there’s nothing distinguishing between the two viewpoints. If I were to open the book to a random chapter, I wouldn’t be able to tell who was talking. Beth really grew as a character, and felt very real. At the beginning, she seemed kind of like a pushover and I was certain that she’d get back together with Adam. Through her interactions with her therapist and with Karen and Ben, as well as through her own success as a songwriter, it’s heartening to see how she grows stronger. The motif of Adam’s parents kept popping up, but when their story was finally revealed, it felt a little forced, and not really necessary to the plot.

This was a very solid book and an easy read, though nothing mind blowing. Overall, the story holds its own, but isn’t terribly enthralling. It's an easy read, however, and I'd recommend it for someone looking for a distraction.

This debut caused me to basically miss a whole day with my family. Highly recommended!

Beth and Adam have parted ways. Not in an amicable way either. Beth discovers Adam has cheated on her, for the second time, and has had enough. Their daughter Meg, is away at University and Beth just cannot take the lies and deceit anymore. She struggles to move on from their break-up as she doesn't know herself as a single unit, just as a wife and a mother. Rattling around her marital home, she wonders if, by kicking Adam out, has she done the right thing. Was a it a knee jerk reaction to his affair? Can she forgive and forget? Can she manage without him?

Adam, meanwhile, is struggling to come to terms with the break-up himself. The novelty of a younger woman, sex on tap and a bachelor life is not as appealing as one would think. He misses the home comforts and the magnitude of his dalliance is swallowing him up. Things are even about to get worse, as an unexpected phone call causes more secrets to come to the surface, and spill into his life. Things couldn't get worse, or could they?

Fionnuala Kearney has written a novel that began so realistically that I felt I was right there beside Beth, almost immediately. The writing is so subtle that you find yourself lost in the world of this family from beginning to end. Beth seems to be a representation of a large percent of women over forty, who have done the major child rearing, picked the dream home and decorated it to within an inch of its life, all while supporting their husbands in a quasi cheer-leading way. A stay at home mother who has a hobby or a 'calling' (in this case, song writing), which occasionally brings home some money, means that Beth has been cocooned in this suburban world, with a kind of separation from reality. Firmly convinced of her husband's adoration, she never suspects he would play away from home again and her world shatters in one foul swoop. Their daughter, nineteen year old Meg, is also devastated by her father's infidelity and she lays on the guilt trip in a heavy handed way. Also gunning for Adam's demise is Karen, Beth's best friend and confident throughout the whole ordeal. Even Adam's younger brother, Ben, is horrified at his sibling's behaviour. All in all, Adam is not popular. With anyone. While we read of his feeling lost and alone, it is hard to feel any sympathy for the creator of his own hard luck.

All through the book, there are little clues to a more uneven past than Beth could imagine. Like chinks of light through uneven floorboards, there is enough to warrant further investigation into the murky darkness, but with the knowledge that you may not like what you find.
Secrets and lies. Who are they usually to protect? The liar, or the people who trust them?

This debut caused me to basically miss a whole day with my family. I knew by the third page that I was hooked and that there was no point in putting it down. I read straight through, until my eyes were unable to fight the good fight anymore, but only with the knowledge that it was the weekend and I could pick up the baton nice and early the next day.
A clever look at human nature, the differences between men and women and the dynamics of the 'average' family. We all have boxes in the attic, labelled and forgotten. How many of us have secrets that we hope remained labelled and forgotten? More, I expect, that you would think...

Highly recommended. Ideal for fans of Jojo Moyes and Diane Chamberlain.

You, Me and Other People is a very accomplished and polished debut novel.

The cover art for You, Me and Other People is so striking, it's clever and very reflective of the story within the pages. I'm a sucker for a beautiful cover and this is one that would certainly catch my eye in a bookshop.

Fionnuala Kearney has given us the story of a broken marriage. There's certainly nothing new about that as the basis for a novel, but this author has cleverly told the story from both sides. The voices of the main characters; Adam and Beth are clear and separate, the characterisation is superb and the dialogue is effective and very authentic.

There is far more to this story than Adam's infidelity. It is a hot bed of secrets, mysteries and long hidden lies, and these are slowly but surely exposed via the author's excellent writing skills.

I didn't like Adam, or what he has done. Not many of the other characters like Adam either, in fact I don't think Adam really likes himself either. Beth, on the other hand, is a strong and determined character.

Despite her heartbreak and feelings of loss towards Adam and her marriage, she is able to realise that she is worth more than Adam. She's also got their daughter Meg to consider, and although it is clear that Adam does love Meg too, it is Beth who deals with Meg's day-to-day sorrow and grief as well as her own.

Most of us will have gone through the heartache of a break-up. Most of us will recognise the feelings and emotions that this author so excellently portrays in her characters. The complexities of modern relationships and the fall-out when they fail are dealt with so well in You, Me and Other People and as certain facts about Adam are slowly uncovered, the reader's feelings about him can change.

You, Me and Other People is a very accomplished and polished debut novel. The story is compelling, the characters are realistic and the writing flows beautifully.

Great short romance

I really liked this book. When I am in the mood for a shorter story i always go to Presents. This one was a very similar story of poor girl meets prince, but the writing made it very original and very good. The characters where developed well and you could understand their actions and reactions to each situation. Very good developement for a shorter story. Got me laughing and crying but enjoyed the full story. Would read from this reader again.

Holly is a waitress who ends up serving herself to Prince Casper. He thinks she's a gold digger out for publicity and money. Holly becomes pregnant after that one encounter and despite not believing he is the father, Casper marries her. They have hot sexual chemistry, but Casper says he doesn't do love. Holly is a really sweet person who quickly wins over the staff and people of her new country. Will she win over Casper?

I really liked this book. It is sexy, romantic, and fun. I really liked Holly. She's very spunky and doesn't back down from what she wants or thinks. Casper is a royal and has been hurt in the past, but still strives to make Holly happy, despite his misgivings.

I would have liked another chapter or epilogue to tell us how things were when the baby came. I docked one star for this. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it!

This book was an entertaining read that occassionally made me smile. The heroine is feisty without being a b#$%*^, and the hero is the typical billionare Italian prince. Holly is likeable because is just too nice to hate, but she stayed with the hero even when she should have shoved her boots heels in his soft tissues and made a break for a life without the perpetual downer (aka Casper).

Casper is a hypersexual Italian male with a libido to rival the entire UK rugby team.

SPOILER: At the beginning of the book, during the first stages of his rather easy seduction of Holly, he asks her if she is using protection. Now, one would assume that since she doesn't have external genitalia, that he is referring to protection from pregnancy. Later on in the book we discover that Casper BELIEVES he is infertile - sterile - shooting blanks...so WHY does he ask Holly is she is using protection?! That's like handing a blind man a blind fold.

Now that I have raised this question, I will summarize my opinion of this book:

It is a quick, fun read, but don't be surprised that when someone asks you if you liked it, all you can do is shrug and say, "Meh".

Good Book

It is a good book overall for anyone who either needs it for a psychology class or is interested in working with children. It is very useful and has a lot of useful facts, plus the price is a steal for a brand new copy.

They do not make this clear at all but this is the international version. Which means you can't resale it. If you are planning on keeping it this is the way to go because it's cheeper. If not don't buy this version!

it takes the fun out of child development

The paperback version is nice because it's cheaper... but after reading it, I think I would prefer the hard cover. Paperback books of a small size are fine, but this one is too large to work as a paperback. I have a hard time reading it because if I put it on my lap it sort of flops over and I can't see the whole page.

As to the content... I found it to be a little insulting. A lot of the points the text makes are sort of trite and obvious. It says things like "children are our future." This is true, but it doesn't seem like something that needs to be said in a college level textbook.

It looks pretty, with nice pictures and quotes in the margins, but there just doesn't seem to be much substance. I think a topic as interesting as child development should have a more interesting book.
