The seventeenth century has gained enormously from the resurgence of historical studies in Spain and from the contributions of historians outside the penninsula. In this book, John Lynch has taken account of this research to substantially revise and expand his Spain Under the Hapsburgs, Volume II . It retains its previous framework, and provides a penetrating account of Spanish society, economy, government and politics during this period.

Review
"Many besides Hispanists who rejoiced in 1964-9 when Professor Lynch gave them a balanced and thoroughly readable account of the two centuries of Spanish history under the Habsburgs must warmly welcome the new editions which form part of Blackwell's History of Spain." History

"This useful collection deserves a wide readership. The appearance of a revised version of the second volume of John Lynch's Spain under the Habsburgs is welcome." European History Quarterly

"It is still the major work of synthesis written in English. The fact that it is but one part of an ambitious fourteen volume collection covering Spanish history from prehistoric to modern times perhaps enhances its value." Sixteenth Century Journal

From the Back Cover
In this book, now available in paper, John Lynch has substantially revised and expanded his Spain Under the Habsburgs, Volume II, taking account of the research of the last decade and the interests of modern historians. The book retains its previous framework and preserves the character which has made it one of the most quoted works on Spain's century of adversity. It continues to cast a penetrating eye on the regime of Philip III and Lerma, the imperial policies of Philip IV and Olivares, the mid-century revolutions, the chronology of depression, and the balance of progress and poverty under Charles II. And it still provides the most comprehensive and challenging account of the role of America in the Hispanic world and of the changing relations between colonies and metropolis.

About the Author
John Lynch has spent most of his academic career in the University of London, first at University College, then the Institute of Latin-American Studies. His research interests have centered on the Hispanic world in the colonial and independence periods.

Excellent explanation of the period.
By Csar Gonzlez Rouco
This book [and " Spain 1516-1598 : From Nation State to World Empire (A History of Spain) "by the same author] has -at least- three strong points on its favor, which makes it very advisable to read: a) it takes great pains to explain -not only to describe- the Spain of the XVII century (a period far less known than the Spain of the XVI century); b) it includes a very relevant section on Spanish America, which is not common in books written on this period; and c) it is reasonable easy to read. I should have rated this book "four and a half" starts. Considering its content, I think it should be five; considering its readability, four. In any event, I do recommend it to read it. (Other books I would recommend to read on Spain: As a general overview, "A History of Spain" by Joseph Perez; and more focused on the XVI -and/or XVII- period: "The Spain of Philip II" by Joseph Perez; "Imperial Spain 1469-1716" and "The Count-Duke of Olivares. The Stateman in an age of decline" both of them written by John Elliot; and "Spain 1469-1714, A Society of Conflict", by Henry Kamen).

The book is exactly what it is supposed to be
By Masters in History Education
This books is the philosophical manifesto of progressivism's socialistic indocrtination centers under the auspices of Middle School. John Dewey's dream of progressive (Socialistic)public education has been realized. Marx, Lennin and Stalin would be impressed with the philosphies in this book.

Make no mistake, this book is exactly what it proports to be. That is why it deserves all five stars.

Very broad
By Kenzie
The book makes sweeping generalizations that seems like common sense. However since this was a mandatory book for a grad school class I like it for that purpose. It is an easy read and makes sense. The book is organized and follows coherent conditions determined by national and state teaching needs for Middle School. Yet, in my experience no book can ever teach you as much about teaching as actually being in the classroom.

Precise on ONE technique: Upper Structure Voicings - get it ?
By PH
This is an excellent book, and it fulfills exactly what it promises. Using upper structures has always been my favorite way to comp, orchestrate and visualize theory. Suzanne adds the concept of 'lower structures' (left hand of course) and the sonorities are rich, easy to get a grip on if you're comfortable at triads and inversions.
But she goes further and helps you apply LS and US to all chord types, not just dominants with altered tensions.

Yeah, there are dozens of US for every chord,, but the author trains you to use the best and most logical ones.

This sin't a book for people looking to get an all-round Jazz Piano lesson. This text is very precise and covers one very useful approach and tool set for serious pianists!

PS: - some earlier dude (calls himself a pro) complained about the exercises lacking rhythm.....LOL

The Industrial Revolution: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions), by Robert C. Allen

The Industrial Revolution was a pivotal point in British history that occurred between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries and led to far reaching transformations of society. With the advent of revolutionary manufacturing technology productivity boomed. Machines were used to spin and weave cloth, steam engines were used to provide reliable power, and industry was fed by the construction of the first railways, a great network of arteries feeding the factories. Cities grew as people shifted from agriculture to industry and commerce. Hand in hand with the growth of cities came rising levels of pollution and disease. Many people lost their jobs to the new machinery, whilst working conditions in the factories were grim and pay was low. As the middle classes prospered, social unrest ran through the working classes, and the exploitation of workers led to the growth of trade unions and protest movements.

In this Very Short Introduction, Robert C. Allen analyzes the key features of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, and the spread of industrialization to other countries. He considers the factors that combined to enable industrialization at this time, including Britain's position as a global commercial empire, and discusses the changes in technology and business organization, and their impact on different social classes and groups. Introducing the "winners" and the "losers" of the Industrial Revolution, he looks at how the changes were reflected in evolving government policies, and what contribution these made to the economic transformation.

ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

a brilliant one-of-a-kind approach to the genre
By James J. Hesson
I used the 2nd edition of this book to teach Academic Writing in a Continuing ed. ESL program to mostly Phd. candidates at the University of Massachusetts, as well as to Phd. students and professors at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. I found this to be an outstanding book for graduate students needing to learn the organizational patterns of IMRD research papers as well as rhetorical strategies commonly employed in such papers. Since these conventions are not typically taught in the ESL courses in the countries my students came from, they typically found the text quite informative. Having revised the English of over 1,400 research papers written by non-native speakers of English, I find this book to be highly relevant for anyone learning the basics of writing research papers. For example, the three moves of the introduction: 1. Begin by defining the larger general territory or context from which the topic of your study develops. 2. Point out a gap or lack of knowledge that exists in the literature about the topic of your study. 3. Indicate how your study fills this gap. Feaks and Swales elaborate on these 3 moves, and illustrate how to structure the introduction according to these three moves. The authors provide a lucid and simple set of points for students, which are quite reassuring to junior authors writing their first paper.

While there are countless guidebooks on writing research papers, the authors address the unique needs of English Language Learners. It is a fine book to use alone, in small groups, or with large classes. One interesting feature of this book is that it does not simply prescribe rules. It is a far more nuanced approach to the topic. The authors cite various studies of applied linguistics that report not on what they think authors should be doing in their writing but instead on what actual authors do in various fields. This book relies heavily on the research of the field of Applied Linguistics, specifically genre analysis. One of the main ideas is develop students awareness of how researchers in their particular field write papers, considering their particular word choice, phrases, and strategies. The idea is to empower students and help them present themselves as knowledgeable and competent members of their particular research discourse community. This is a book that challenges students to think about how they wish to present their research; it does not provide a simplistic lists of dos and don'ts; it encourages thoughtful self-reflection. This feature sets it apart from common writing guidebooks.

The the detailed review of issues related to writing the title, abstract, introduction, material and methods, results, and discussion, the lesson on hedging, citation patterns, the formulaic language used in various parts of a paper, the mixing of complex grammar with certain rhetorical strategies of research papers, all make this book a brilliant one-of-a-kind approach to the genre. The third edition, which covers more examples from natural and physical sciences, seems to have only greatly improved this superb book. Personally, after teaching ELL for 8 years in public schools, I was inspired by this book to delve deeper into English for Academic Purposes in higher education and research. I would highly recommend this book for any ELL graduate student aiming to improve their ability to write research papers.

Excellent text, especially for Ph.D students
By KB
I've been using the 2nd edition of this Academic Writing for Graduate Students in a writing class for international graduate students for several years. I liked it a lot, but this edition is even better. It's considerably longer than the last edition, contains example texts and exercises from a greater variety of fields, and works well both for in-class activities and individual study. One improvement over the last edition is the emphasis on "old to new" informational flow to improve clarity and coherence. Also, the skeletal sentences throughout the text (typical sentence structures found in academic writing that students can adapt for use in their own writing) are especially useful for students whose first language is not English.

I should add, though, that this edition is probably more appropriate for Ph.D. students and visiting scholars than it is for master's students. I used it in a class composed almost entirely of doctoral students and international faculty members, and they reported that they learned a lot from the text. One of my colleagues, however, used it in a class composed mainly of master's students, and he found it less effective. In fact, he preferred the previous edition and thought that the 3rd edition was inappropriate for most of the students in his class. I prefer the 3rd edition and would recommend it to any doctoral students who want to master the genre of academic writing. I should also add that the commentary that can be purchased separately from the main text has also been significantly improved over the previous edition. The 2nd edition commentary was not worth buying, but the 3rd edition is much more useful, especially for students who are buying Academic Writing for Graduate students for individual study. Finally, at less than $30, this text is very good value for money.

Excellent framework for workshops & writing course
By squeeko
Very insightful compilation of the myriad tasks (exercises) that compose the path to successful completion of graduate work--helpful for most grads with English as first or second language. Brief explanations of learning objectives followed by generous use of example texts and penetrating questions for students. Accompanying instructor's guide provides broad range of answer choices for quick prep. I've adapted sections for a 6-part workshop series that many students find more convenient and less demanding than an elective course. Note: Cormell grad writing site has link to free download of supportive reference by Keith Hjortshoj "Writing From A to B: A Guide to Completing the Dissertation Phase of Doctoral Studies" (2010). Also Stanford's Hume Center has link to free download of template package by Sohol Lee & Julia Bleakney "Writing Research Statements for Graduate Student Fellowship and Grant Proposals: Workshop Writing Kit" (c.2010). Tomorrow, the Killing (Low Town Book 2), by Daniel Polansky

The fresh, astonishing follow-up to the acclaimed Low Town, again combining steely hard-boiled crime with dark fantasy

Once he was a hero of the Great War, and then a member of the dreaded Black House. Now he is the criminal linchpin of Low Town. His name is Warden. He thought he had left the war behind him, but a summons from up above brings the past sharply, uncomfortably, back into focus. General Montgomery's daughter is missing somewhere in Low Town, searching for clues about her brother's murder. The General wants her found, before the stinking streets can lay claim to her, too. Dark, violent, and shot through with corruption, this book is a fantastic successor to a much-heralded fantasy debut.

Review
"With THE STRAIGHT RAZOR CURE, Polansky pushed the envelope of modern fantasy. With TOMORROW THE KILLING, he tears through the envelope and pushes for horizons yet unseen." Myke Cole, author of Control Point 'In Tomorrow the Killing, Polansky shows us he is no one-book wonder... If you haven't read Polansky yet, you must remedy this ASAP. He writes gripping, addictive stories with a grim eloquence...Very, very highly recommended. Polansky is definitely among my new favourite authors. Essential reading.' civilian-reader.blogspot.com 'Tomorrow The Killing delivers more of the same noir-esque brilliance that placed The Straight Razor Cure amongst the top releases of last year.' The British Fantasy Society Praise for THE STRAIGHT RAZOR CURE: 'Quite brilliant... The Straight Razor Cure is as good a debut as I've read in along time. [It] has it all - and as the name suggests, it is sharp, steely and viciously bloody. Highly recommended' John Berlyne, SF Revu 'Quite possibly the newest, freshest fantasy novel since Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind. It is, in short, the bastard son of George R. R. Martin and Raymond Chandler, an unusual combination of hard-boiled crime novel in a fantasy world setting.' readerdad.co.uk 'Polansky's writing is confident and punchy from the offset. The action rips along at a brilliant pace allowing us to experience this gritty world through the eyes of a thrilling, dangerous, flawed, yet strangely endearing protagonist. This is modern, dark fantasy at its best and a debut to be envied.' British Fantasy Society 'Polansky hits all the right notes in his intelligent first novel, a blend of dystopian fantasy and hard-boiled crime... Sharp, noir-tinged dialogue and astute insights into class struggle mark Polansky as a writer with a future' Publishers Weekly 'A strong debut novel with a hero who doesn't waste time worrying about the moral implications of cutting someone's throat' Kirkus Reviews 'Polansky transplants his love of crime noir into a magic-steeped, secondary-world fantasy setting. It's an inherently troublesome mash-up that could only work in the hands of a silly satirist or a deft, sensitive dramatist with the blackest sense of humor. Polansky is wholeheartedly the latter - and Low Town is brilliant proof ... Wielding vivid characters and scalpel-sharp banter worthy of fellow dark fantasists Scott Lynch and Joe Abercrombie, Polansky ratchets up the pace ... Polansky has managed to craft an assured, roaring, and rollicking hybrid, a cross-genre free-for-all that relishes its tropes while spitting out their bones. And he does it all while spinning one hell of a gripping mystery' avclub.com 'Daniel Polansky has crafted a thrilling novel steeped in noir sensibilities and relentless action, and set in an original world of stunning imagination, leading to a gut-wrenching, unforeseeable conclusion. Low Town is an attention-grabbing debut that will leave readers riveted ... and hungry for more' missiontoread.com An impossible to put down read, showing how dark fantasy can truly be thefoundingfields.com 'The Straight Razor Cure is dark, eloquent work filled with a very real presence that permeates both the world and the characters within it. Polansky has created a wickedly delicious fantasy that leaves a profound impression on the reader. Despite the plague, murderers and dark magic, I can't wait to pay another visit to Low Town' mithrilwisdom.blogspot.com 'I can't remember when I last enjoyed a fantasy book this much' Books Monthly

a hard-boiled noir thriller with a touch of fantasy
By Layers of Thought
The second in the Low Town series, this is a hard-boiled noir thriller with a touch of fantasy mixed in for good measure. A remorseless, violent and twisty story that is filled with intriguing characters.

About: The Warden, the main character, sort of rules over a squalid and drug-infested corner of Low Town. An ex-soldier and intelligence office who has fallen far from grace, he now sells (and frequently consumes) drugs. The Warden is hard, smart and extremely bitter, and he oozes cynicism.

With frequent flashbacks to the years he spent fighting for his country in a dreadful, carnage-filled war, the story starts when the Warden is summoned to the house of an old general, and finds out that the general's daughter has run off and disappeared into Low Town. She is trying to find out why her brother was murdered several years before and who was responsible for his death. Her brother was an inspirational leader who also fought in the war; and the Warden knew him well. The Warden reluctantly agrees to help but, to no-one's great surprise, the daughter too is brutally murdered.

This sparks a trail of revenge and destruction that envelopes both the guilty and the innocent - though it seems like in Low Town no-one is entirely innocent. Fuelled by drugs and old enmities, the Warden is pulling strings and orchestrating a lot of the violence, but inevitably things spiral way beyond his control as higher powers and politicians strive to achieve their hidden agendas.

John's thoughts: I like the Warden - he's a terrific character. Horrendously scarred by his troubled past, he is now a dark and dangerous man, but he hasn't quite lost his humanity and just sometimes is driven by his sense of justice. Living in a dark and corrupt world, you can almost forgive him for some of his selfishness and outrageous actions. Here the Warden plots and schemes and has to work hard to try and stay one step ahead of an ever growing list of adversaries. He mostly succeeds but regularly ends up on the wrong side of a beating. This is not a squeaky clean hero who always gets his way. MeanLow Townwhile the Warden (or Polansky) has a great way with words and many of his acidic descriptions and banter brought a big smile to my face.

In this book he is surrounded by many other interesting characters - including the Warden's giant one-eyed army buddy and business partner, the malevolent Old Man that runs the country's internal security forces, the witch-woman Mazzie of the Stained Bone, and the psychopathic young vice-lord Adisu the Damned. As these people are woven into the story, the plot twists and turns and is unpredictable - always a good thing.

Compared with Polansky's first Low Town novel (reviewed here [...], Tomorrow the Killing has less magic and fantastic elements and is a somewhat more realistic tale, albeit set in an alternative world. The war that provides a main foundation for the plot has a lot of parallels with World War One, and Polansky does a great job of describing its horrors. You now understand a lot more about what has shaped the Warden and made him what he is. Personally I like the more realistic orientation of this story and prefer it to his first novel.

If you haven't read the first Polansky novel and are worried about reading this in case it doesn't make sense - don't! This is a complete story and stands on its own two feet. I'd rate this four stars and thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes noir, crime thrillers or earthy urban tales. If you enjoyed reading Low Town, this is a "must read".

A Great Sequel
By Brandon Zarzyczny
I really enjoyed my second outing in Low Town, and while the story of Tomorrow the Killing may not have been quite as good as the first novel. I again loved the mix of noir mystery/thriller and fantasy, but here there wasn't quite as much mystery to solve. The Warden knows almost everything that happened in the past, even though the reader is read mostly in the dark, but I had most of it figured out, even the big twist, which was much smaller and more obvious than the first book's twist. Instead this story has a really interesting and entertaining series of flashbacks to the Warden's military history. These parts are incredibly well written, and provide a great view on grittier realistic fantasy warfare, and all of the horrifying consequences. I would love to read an epic fantasy story in a similar militaristic vein from the author. For this story, other than learning more backstory of the Warden, there really isn't any character development, which was a little disappointing. There is some possibly interesting stuff going on with the kid the warden and his big sidekick adopted, but it didn't really develop enough, possibly because it may be the main storyline for the next book. I really enjoy the Warden, but in this book it kind of felt like he was getting beaten up way too often, and he was a bit too mean and nasty to everyone, but I guess that's just who the character is.

Overall, I just really loved reading this book, and I look forward to the series continuing. I would definitely recommend this book, and you could definitely start with this book and not be too confused, it would be okay as a standalone, but I would still recommend you read Low Town/The Straight Razor Cure first.

Another bout of fantasy crime noir
By Steve Benner
"Tomorrow, the Killing" is the second in Daniel Polansky's "Low Town" series of novels. Every bit as dark, moody and atmospheric as the first book in the series, "The Straight Razor Cure"; the book's central protagonist, Warden, remains every bit as laconic as in the earlier volume and, it seems, even more intent on self-destruction. Polansky's writing is as hard-edged and incisive as ever, and the fantasy world he paints even bleaker than the real one and yet there is something endearing and oddly attractive about the whole sorry state of affairs, too; the book is a gripping and compulsive read, with a cracking pace and a well balanced story line. If I have one gripe, it is that the author makes rather too much of the various layers of duplicity at play within his complex plot line, making it need just a little more brain power than is entirely comfortable for the frenetic pace of the narrative and making the final twist, when it comes, nothing like as effective as it should perhaps have been.

But don't let that put you off, because all in all this a great read for those who like dark, gritty (and occasionally gruesome) fantasy crime noir tales that are well spun and well above the ordinary.

The story is sufficiently self-contained for it not to matter if you haven't read the earlier volume. Highly recommended.

ANOTHER REVIEW:

THE AMERICAN JAIL

CORNERSTONE OF MODERN CORRECTIONS

Pearson Prentice Hall, 2008

by

1st Lt. Gary F. Cornelius (Retired)

Fairfax County Office of the Sheriff (VA)

Adjunct Faculty: George Mason University

Administration of Justice Program

Co Founder: ETC Consultants, LLC: Education and Training in Corrections

This book provides a compressive historical perspective on jails in America. The book is one that provides an evolutionary and informational view of how local jails developed in this country, the mission of the local jail as it pertains to criminal justice, public safety and the safety of inmates, as well as current status of jails and the future of the American jail.

The American Jail: Cornerstone of Modern Corrections is organized in a manner that makes it useful for criminal justice students just learning about America’s jails or for the reader who is also a practitioner. The author retired from corrections after working in a local jail for over 27 years, is a trainer at several criminal justice academies, an author of several books on corrections and has taught criminal justice courses-including courses on local jails and community corrections, for over 20 years. He is very familiar with in service training, teaching at the undergraduate college level and the needs of both college students and corrections personnel.

The usefulness of this book lies in the statistical data, research findings, programming information, operational information and the views that are offered by practitioners. It is the combination of the above that makes this such a valuable and unique text.

This text would be of value for any college course on jails. Students will find this a practical text that is easy to read with references that will support their course of study. As an adjunct instructor this is a text that I would definitely choose for my students. Specifically, the book starts with the historical perspective that provides the necessary foundation for understanding the evolution of the American jail. Within the first chapter the reader is presented with details regarding the growth of the jail population and the impact on the physical structure of jails. For the reader who is not familiar with terms such as linear, podular and direct supervision, the author has included historical photos as well as current photos of different jails both inside and out. These illustrations help the support the reader as he or she gains perspective and understanding on the changes that have occurred over time.

For the college instructor and the training officer the text is laid out in a systematic manner with chapter objectives, highlights, points of view written by practitioners (one point of view was written by a former inmate), review questions, terms to know, end notes and a lengthy glossary at the end of the book.

This text is clearly written by a practitioner from both the field of corrections and higher education. The combination of this experience has resulted in a text that is useful in both environments providing an accurate detailed account of the American Jail.

Reviewed by Kathleen Mickle-Askin, MC, Director of Training, Delaware Department of Correction. Ms. Mickle-Askin is the 2007-2008 President of the International Association of Correctional Training Personnel and also has taught as an adjunct instructor at Delaware Technical and Community College, Wilmington University and the University of Delaware.

The following is a review of the book, The American Jail, Cornerstone of Modern Corrections:

It is my belief that this book could serve as an excellent resource as a manual for training new jail staff in understanding how jails in the United States serve in an important role in the criminal justice system. It begins with the history and development of the American Jail and how they evolved in the United States.

The twelve chapters outline every important factor of the jail system and how each works in the development and operation of a well run, modern jail.

Each chapter, from Jail Security to The Future of the America Jail contains a feature called “Point of View” written by either a person who lives and breathes jail work every day or an academic person who has researched the American Jail and how it functions. These additions add to the credibility of the information in each chapter. I also like how the publisher high- lighted each of the Points of View to show the reader that extensive research was conducted for each chapter and it is not just the author’s point of view.

Illustrations throughout the book help new correctional officers or students in a criminal justice education program understand what it is like inside an American jail from the beginning to today. They also show how jails have changed and why these changes are so important.

Examples of forms and reports will help the correctional officer, either a new officer or “rookie” or a seasoned officer understand different forms and operations from other agencies. They could also compare them to their institutions as to how and why the forms are used and how other forms and reports are put together from other jails. It also shows the importance of documentation such as the incident report and the necessity of all the facts that happen and put in order of who, what, when, where, why, how and action taken. It also is important that both the spelling and grammar are correct because this incident report could end up in a court of law.

Each chapter also has a summary which gives a brief overview of the chapter. Review questions at the end of each chapter enhance the learning experience of the student and/or the participant in the training program/course. These could also be used by a professional trainer or teacher as pre and post test questions for each module. The “Terms to Know” feature at the end of each chapter helps the correctional officer and student comprehend the jail language and operational terms. All terms are defined in an extensive Glossary at the end of the text.

In summation, I feel that The American Jail is an excellent reference manual that could be used in a training class to develop new correctional officers assigned to work in a jail setting and also for students attending a college course on jails. It clearly shows how the jail works, and how important it is to the community in keeping the staff and public safe and the inmates safely confined. It also gives an overview of the future of the jails in the United States. I would recommend this book be used as a training manual for anyone entering law enforcement either as a police officer or a correctional officer working within the jail environment. I also recommend it for anyone who is interested in learning more about jails.

The American Jail: Cornerstone of Modern Corrections

Despite the fact that nearly every county and large city in America has long had a jail, jails remain a mystery to a vast majority of citizens. Even for many students of criminal justice and practitioners working within and beyond the walls, the operations of our jails are difficult to grasp. The American Jail — Cornerstone of Modern Corrections by Gary F. Cornelius succeeds in unraveling the mysteries for the reader by sorting fact from fiction in a straightforward and organized manner. The reader does not get lost, confused or overwhelmed by all the information.

Though there may never be a single source that covers all there is to know about jails and though it cannot replace years of correctional experience, a well researched, reliable source of information jump starts the process of learning what American jails are all about. The American Jail pulls theory and practice together so the reader has a real understanding of both, and it provides a comprehensive, quick study. Starting with jail history and development and closing with the future of the American jail, this book presents a wealth of information in clear and concise text.

Presenting new information in a way that promotes understanding is the acid test for any non-fiction writing, and this book by Mr. Cornelius will surely pass the test for any reader interested in the subject of the American jail. I have over thirty years in this business, and I found the book both helpful and informative. A copy is now among my office collection.

THE AMERICAN JAIL

Cornerstone of Modern Corrections

By Gary F. Cornelius Prentice Hall. 504 pp.

What is the American jail? Who are its inhabitants? How does that world behind bars truly function? Thanks in large part to movies, prime time television and twenty-four hour news, it’s hard to go about daily life in the United States without broaching the subject of corrections. In “The American Jail: Cornerstone of Modern Corrections”, Gary F. Cornelius sets out to give his reader “whether he or she is a jail officer in training or a criminal justice student in college, a realistic view of the world of the local jail.” Drawing upon his twenty-seven years of working in jails, Cornelius constructs a textbook which provides an incredible wealth of information regarding the history, operations and future of the American jail. Because it is written from the perspective of a practitioner, the book provides a unique contribution to the criminal justice and corrections field.

The book is organized into twelve chapters, covering topics such as jail history, social climate, inmate classification, staff, and the future of the American jail. Each chapter begins with a set of learning objectives and then proceeds into the meat of the text. At the end of each chapter, the author presents a set of review questions and a list of important terms which themselves appear in bold in the text. Also included in each chapter is an essay aptly titled, “Point of View”. These essays are each written by an individual with experience in corrections and provide opinions and information that is relevant to the information presented in the chapter.

Cornelius intends for this book to serve as an informative source for both college students and correctional staff in training and in that end he succeeds. Its chapters are well-organized, with clearly laid out objectives, intelligent chapter sections and where appropriate, pictures, diagrams and even photocopies of documents used in jails. The overall visual presentation makes the information easy to digest and provides would-be instructors with information that is already tailored towards a syllabus. University students and professors may find the later chapters on jail standards, community corrections, and the future of the American jail to be most interesting and thought-provoking for class discussion. These focus on issues related to current criminal justice policy and the evolution of future advances in the field. Officers in training will likely get the most out of the middle chapters covering climate, programs and staff. Such sections also include examples of real-life incidents that add credence to the information presented.

While the book presents information valuable to both trainees and students, the book in its entirety may be too much for either party to consume. For example, students may be overwhelmed with the amount and specificity of procedural information, in particular one instance about the different types and purposes of keys. And trainees may not find many of the review questions particularly helpful. They will find greater value in parts of the text which cover procedure and purpose. Of course, the procedure outlined in the text is of course intended to serve as a supplement to training, not in place of it.

Because college students and correctional staff are vastly different in purpose and demographic, it would be impossible for any text to be perfectly suited for both at once. Students and trainees would benefit from the “Point of View” essays as they give students a glimpse into a world they may not ever come into contact with and provide insight from practitioners themselves. However, instructors should navigate the book and determine which sections best suit their learning interests and how they should be used. “The American Jail” is inspired in its depth, unique in its perspective, and used wisely, a formidable learning tool.
