Great Overview of Parisitology

I think this book makes a great companion to any parasitology text. It covers the "major" parasites and some vectors in example photos of perfect clarity. If you must identify such specimens in the laboratory, this is a great refrence book. Most examples you could come across will not be this clear, so the atlas will help you note the major differences between parasites, making identification easier. There is little or no "background noise" like there are on most slides available today so that you can focus on the parasite itself.

Good benchtop atals

I recently acquired a copy of this book, and found it quite good, the photographs present throughout the book, were well done and good for a atlas to have near the microscope as more than representation of the parasite appears, a failing found in some of the more established atalses. The fact that all of the photos are photos and ther are a number of them makes the book usefull in the lab environment. The accompany burst with each photo is concise and free of extraneous detail. However there are two critisms, the book would fae better if printed on a water resistant paper and a stronger back and front cover which a fixed by adding by own stronger front and back cover. this relates to the spiral bound edition.

This review is of the newest edition.
The new edition is on good papaer is spiral bound and has a good cover the CD adds volumes to the Book. The author has improved on the book. This is a book that would benefit by being in any parasitologists. Library

A Wonderful Atlas to keep in your collection

I find this atlas extremely helpful. It was supposed to be a supplement to my Microbiology textbook for the Parasitology chapter, but I find this atlas is an even more powerful tool when used in conjunction with the CDC parasitology website. It includes detailed graphics, the life cycles mentioned by CDC, plus many different pictures of the same specimens to compare and contrast with. Nearly all of the organisms from my textbook were mentioned or thoroughly presented in picture and different stages and this is what I needed most as a student studying from a clinical findings perspective. It goes without saying that the CD included with this atlas is also very helpful as the author took a lot of time to design a comprehensive "study guide" online with quizzes that challenged the reader to recognize the same concepts through different types of questions. Overall, I got more than I expected when I purchased this book. Don't be fooled by its simple binding and cover-- it is packed with visuals!

Man on a Journey

I wanted to like this latest book by James Arthur Ray. The author is a tireless speaker and teacher trying to lift our consciousness and that is a very, very good thing. And his contributing author, Linda Silvertsen, is someone whose writings I have previously enjoyed in Balance Magazine.

Indeed, there was much I liked about the book. Most importantly, it is a very substantive book in a world where so many books of this type are feel good, quick reads (which have their place). And, it is written in the aggressive, challenging style that the author unabashedly proclaims is his intent. As Ray says near the end in talking about reading the book: "Some of it (may have) excited you, some of it may have made you uncomfortable, some of it struck you as full of it, some of it flat out confused you. That is all good." Because of the author's challenging style, I used the book to challenge my thinking on what it takes to take one's performance to an even higher level. I enjoy a book that challenges my thinking, and this one did so.

I also liked the fact that the book is apparently designed to be well integrated into online tools that will help readers extend their insights on a variety of areas. (I say apparently as the site was not operating at the time I write this and was instead harvesting emails, and doing so with a privacy policy with an usual twist that you will want to consider carefully. "Harvesting" because after supplying my email, I did not get access to the info promised in the book, instead I was told I was now "just" on a mailing list. I very much want to believe this is just an early glitch.)

Regretfully, for me, the book had some annoying shortcomings, in addition to the online material seemingly not yet being available as promised. The author seems to pick fights that seem out of keeping with his expressed interest in peace and seemingly do little other than needlessly offend. As just one example from a handful I could give, he devotes a page to seemingly try to support the notion that the real innovators are those that either didn't go to college or did poorly in college. Could it possibly be that the author hasn't really gotten over his own self-consciousness about his education? I, for one, am grateful to the many scientists with PHD's whose research has made, and continues to make, discoveries that save lives and help us lead better lives while we are here on earth. Sure, there are well educated people that have done little with all their formal education. And, there are people who have not been extensively (formally) educated who have made great contributions to society. So why put down either end of the spectrum, especially if ones true intention is to raise the consciousness of all?

Even more troubling was the fact that I found reading the book a bit of a chore. I like to be mentally stretched by a book but I don't like to have to work unduly to be stretched. Not sure I can explain why, but at times I kept thinking the book was needlessly convoluted.

Of the fifty plus reviews I have written on Amazon, this book is -- by far -- the most challenging to rate. If you are in need for an "in your face" style wake-up (along the lines of a Dr Phil style), you will like this book and perhaps a five star rating would be in order. Fans of the author will undoubtedly like a new Ray book, although some fans will likely question how much is really fresh thinking compared to prior books. For fans of Mr. Ray, a four or five star rating is probably in order. For those who like their self-help guidance more compassionately given, I expect that a three star rating would be more the order of the day. I am going to settle on giving it a four star rating and hope the author forgives me as I am very, very grateful for what I learned by thinking through the book. With two graduate degrees, it may just be that I am too much of a lost soul to fully appreciate some of the author's strong biases; hence my four star rating.

One final thought. What I liked most about the book is that for me it read more like a tour of the world of self-help and a self-analysis of one man's search for meaning. As one who believes that all of us are on a journey and can learn from the journeys of others, I came away surmising that the author is - perhaps -- only midway through a journey that will hopefully bring him to a place of deep, personal peace wherein he can be at peace with all of us. I am saving my five star rating, for this author, for the great book I expect is still within him and will be written when he reaches that place of deep peace.

Like Pages Scattered In The Wind

James Arthur Ray knows his stuff. As someone familiar with his other books, I know that James can walk his talk, and is capable of being a compelling and motivating speaker. Just look up some of his videos on YouTube and you'll see that he has amazing recall and mastery of the work.
Having said this, you would expect Harmonic Wealth, his largest and most ambitious work so far, to be a veritable gold mine of information.
And you would be right, but also wrong.
Imagine if I approached you and told you that I had all the knowledge you needed to live an amazing life. It was all written down in detail, and all you had to do was read it, follow the steps and you, too, could change your life.
You'd be excited right?
You'd want that book!
Now next imagine that I take all the pages of the book and put them into a shredder. Each page cut up into thousands of pieces, like confetti after a New Years Eve party.
You'd be sad and disappointed and maybe a bit pissed, right?

That's how I feel after reading Harmonic Wealth.
It's full of great information, but it's so poorly designed, so poorly thought out, so poorly edited, that I came away sad and disheartened.
I was hoping that James would, after going into detail about each pillar, lay out some easy to find, easy to collect, concrete steps that I could take toward improving that pillar.
It just frustrates me that while I read, I keep wondering "What are you recommending?" "What worked for you?" "How can I duplicate your experience in my world?"
Like I said, a recap at the end of each chapter, and then again, at the end of each pillar of the main points to remember and concrete actions to take would make this book even more amazing.
I recommend that you do buy the book, but read it with a notepad or a stack of index cards handy to write out the action steps that James recommends for a better life.
Follow those cards, follow those notes, integrate them as habits into your life and you will change it for the better.
This is a C book from an A+ teacher.

Great message, wrong messenger

I enjoyed James Ray in The Secret so I was excited when I received the audiobook for Harmonic Wealth as a gift. My excitement quickly turned to utter annoyance. Ray tries to make his reading sound causal, but it really sounds like forced bad acting. He talks down to the listener and judges those who are not as "enlightened" as he is. He does a lot of name dropping and at one point compares himself to Bill Gates and Richard Branson! He calls himself a spiritual leader, but he behaves like a smarmy used car salesman, peddling spiritual wisdom instead of automobiles.

James Ray's "five pillars of harmonic wealth" sounds like an interesting concept, but he does a very poor job of outlining it, and is all over the place in his explanation of each pillar. There were many times when I didn't know which pillar he was actually talking about because he had been boasting about himself for so long. This book is really just an advertisement for his harmonic wealth idea, and apparently you have to give him more money to find out what it really is, as he doesn't actually tell you what to do to become as "enlightened" as he is. At one point he even tells the listener to go to his website and order his expensive mediation cds.

This book is also a vehicle for Ray to gloat about himself. He spends quite a lot of time praising himself and bragging about his own achievements. He probably should have just written an autobiography and called it "I'm Better Than You." The book would have been about half the size if he hadn't included so much useless information about himself. I'm wondering if he had to pad the book with his own gloating because he hadn't fully developed his five pillar idea or if he wasn't able to fully develop the idea because he was so wrapped up his is own narcissism.

That said, there are a few good pearls of wisdom here, but you have to wade through a lot of muck to get to them. I'm sure there are other books out there on the law of attraction that are much better and much more worthy of your money.

Perfect for fans of this series and of small town romance with a little pet hair on the carpet

The first I have read of this series set in Barefoot William, No One Like You is the fourth in this contemporary romance series from Kate Angell. A lovely small town tale with large dogs, beachside moments and plenty of heart.

Former event planner Beth is recovering from a career disaster and is desperately searching for a job to pay the bills. When a temporary personal assistant / dog walker position opens up with baseball star Rylan, she is desperate enough to take a chance, even though she doesn’t particularly like dogs.

As Beth’s appeal to people and dogs alike starts to niggle at Rylan, he is becoming attached to the redhead that seems to create order out of chaos, and his dog Atlas is completely bedazzled by her.

Frequent long passages that describe the town, vistas and schedules, as well as insets with various townsfolk helped to ground the story firmly, while the development and display of the personalities of the four-legged characters Atlas, Rue and the dachshund pair are clever insets of honest doggie-antics and add to the feel good tone of the story.

My one real issue with this story was not in the slow-developing relationship that often took a backseat to the town or dogs, but the frequent and occasionally jarring head-hopping between Beth and Rylan. While dialogue, description and the dogs are wonderful, it took some time for the voices of Beth and Rylan developed a tone and feel that was unique and specific to each character. That does resolve, and their slow grow to romance does erupt with some fireworks, but the struggle between the elements: romance, the town and the dogs kept the romance on the back burner, a secondary plot in this story about the town and its doggie inhabitants.

As the fourth in the series, this book did work well alone, I didn’t find any great lack of information with secondary characters, and the dogs truly do steal the show frequently. Perfect for fans of this series and of small town romance with a little pet hair on the carpet.

Loved Atlas... and the rest of the gang

A great summer beach read with laugh out loud moments, a big dog with big plans and two humans in need of love. I am a full on sucker for dogs but I have to admit that Atlas stole my heart. But more about him later.

Beth is a sweetie. Generous, unfailingly kind, an overachiever. She's thoughtful and willing to give her time and affection. She's got a bit of a cloud hanging over her head, something we slowly learn about, but if she hadn't experienced what she had in the past she wouldn't have ended up in Barefoot William building a new family and a new life.

While I liked Rylan as a person - he's really a great guy, supportive, friendly, free with his time and his money, adores his dogs, all things that are characteristics of a great guy - liking him as a romantic lead came a little slower. I mean, he hired her because he wasn't attracted to her and he says he doesn't want her but he doesn't want anyone else to have her. He needed a smack upside his head. But he grew on me as he grew on Beth as the feeling of partnership between them grew. I liked how supportive he was of her. When he sees something that she's good at he wants to help her. He wants her to be happy.

Atlas, the great big Great Dane is the character who really stole the show. Dogs can be seriously smart and manipulative and Atlas definitely is. He's a matchmaker, a sweetheart, and when he accidentally gives Beth a black eye - he's a big, strong dog - he brings her all his toys in an effort to make her feel better. Like I said, he's a sweetheart.

I also have to mention the supporting characters, the extended Cates clan - Rylan seems to be related to nearly everyone in Barefoot William - and Halo and Landon, two of Rylan's teammates who are troublemakers.

If you're looking for a lighthearted love story with entertaining characters give No One Like You a try, I think you'll enjoy it too.

especially his temperamental Great Dane Atlas

Home is where the heart is and nothing is more true for professional baseball player Rylan Cates, who loves his hometown of Barefoot William, Florida. He’s convinced the powers that be to hold the 8-week spring practice there before they move to Atlanta for the season. Unfortunately, his personal assistant just got married and is on her honeymoon, so he’s going to have to find some temporary help while he’s in Florida. There’s no shortage of applicants, but he needs someone who won’t distract him. Plus, he needs to find someone who will be able to handle his four dogs, especially his temperamental Great Dane Atlas. Two of the three finalists are women he’d like to “date,” so that leaves the last one–Beth Avery. She’s cute but just not his type. And for some reason, Atlas fell in love with her immediately. And since he considers his dog an excellent judge of character, he figures she’s the best one for the job. Plus, she didn’t run screaming when Atlas climbed on top of her on the couch. Sold!

Beth Avery is kind of on the run. A party planner in Maryland, she’d had a colossal failure both professionally and personally and wasn’t allowed to forget it. Starting over in Florida, even if it was only for eight weeks, would give her some cash and some time to think about where she wanted to go and what she wanted to do next. Luckily she loves animals since a large portion of this involves taking care of the owner’s four dogs. And taking care of his schedule and helping him plan get togethers? A breeze for this ex-party planner extraordinaire.

Somehow, even though Beth wasn’t “his type,” Ry ends up making the moves on his housekeeper. Who wouldn’t? Her impish personality and the way that she takes care of things just wins his heart, plus the dogs just adore her. Soon enough, he’s thinking he doesn’t want to leave her behind after the eight weeks are over. Beth is also feeling the love–but isn’t this just a temporary gig? Why oh why do these people never communicate?

Sports romances are always a great read, and the sexy heat between the two main characters was off the charts hot. While I didn’t always follow the story line as well as I would have wanted, and the secondary characters–while charming–sometimes clouded the main plot, I did come away overall liking this sweet treat of a book. Thanks!

Fantastic read! Sexy and thrilling!

Fantastic read! GLIMMER by Beth Kery is a story that will have your mind constantly wandering with so many possibilities. With such an intriguing and sexy plot, full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing, this page turner is impossible to put down.

This being my first read from author Beth Kery, I didn’t know what to expect. In doing some research, I was thinking it would be something along the lines of Sylvia Day’s work, but I was pleasantly surprised. This was something different, something mysterious, and something incredibly sexy and I loved every single minute of it. I’ve never read anything like GLIMMER, and I just love it when that happens. You go in with fresh eyes and an open mind and you get blindsided with how good this truly was. The writing was superb. The characters were to die for with their amazing chemistry and all of the incredibly steamy scenes. Let me tell you ladies, Dylan Fall is to die for. He’s gorgeous, successful, and dominant with a tender side. A total swoon worthy babe for sure!

The heroine, Alice Reed was a great character to get to know. Somewhat relatable with her ‘don’t give a s***’ attitude and her smart ass banter, I connected with her right away. She’s incredibly smart, but doesn’t show it off. She’s beautiful, yet she’s incredibly down to earth. She is confident, but leery of others who compliment her. She is Dylan Fall’s perfect match and yet they couldn’t be from more different worlds. When the gorgeous CEO and billionaire takes a liking to Alice, everything changes. What was once a sexy fling is about to become so much more. The sexy CEO is hiding something, and when Alice finally finds out the truth, something shifts inside her and her world is thrown for a loop.

This thrilling and erotic romance will have you panting, and gasping for air. You think you know how this is going to end, but you have no idea! Keep in mind this is only book 1 and GLIMMER does end with a tiny cliffhanger. But it’s nothing that will make you lose sleep. GIMMER, however, will stay on your mind for a couple of days after the fact. It will either have you standing up and shouting, ‘I KNEW IT!’ or you will be shouting, ‘WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?’ either way you will have such a fantastic time reading this book. I could not recommend enough. Beth Kery has made a true fan out of me!

Glimmer is a bam, in-your-face, sexy read. I was captivated, I was seduced and I couldn’t put it down. It was a delightful and happy surprise.

Dylan Durand is CEO of Durand Inc. The company recruits potential managers by having the new hires go through a training process at their camp. The camp is focuses towards under privileged kids, by providing a positive outlet. The new hires are in charge a set of kids to lead throughout the duration of the camp.

Alice just graduated and is surprised to find out that she landed a spot at the camp. She isn’t like the other hires. She doesn’t come from money and she doesn’t have connections.

But Dylan sees something in Alice during the interview and gives Alice a chance.

"You’re a goddess disguised as a bad-girl math geek. "

I love when Dylan and Alice first meet. Alice goes in for an interview and Dylan is very polished and sophisticated. Alice doesn’t fumble during the interview, but her sassy mouth kind of gets her into trouble and she thinks she blows the interview. It’s completely adorable and cute.

I knew I was going to love this book.

When Alice first arrives at the camp, it’s very apparent how different she is compared to the other hires. Some of them, like the girls kind of ignore her or make snarky comments. Of course there is someone (other than Dylan) who has interests in her and I love it!

Dylan shows up at the camp and you know where this is going! Dylan and Alice have great chemistry. I think what I loved about their relationship is that it wasn’t insta-love. Yes there’s incredible sexual tension, but I liked how they wanted to get to know each other.

"I know more than you think. And what I don’t know, I’m going to discover. "

What I really enjoyed is the mystery element of the book. There are some suspenseful parts and it sets a perfect background tone to the read. It’s kind of eerie, but completely addictive. You question who Dylan is, why is Alice paranoid, what secrets are Dylan keeping and what will happen to Alice?!

But during it all, the steamy scenes were the best! Oh my. Beth Kery did not disappoint. Glimmer is very kinky, but tasteful and very satisfying. I’m just being honest.

I can’t say it enough. I loved this book. I was completely surprised on everything. I loved the plot, the characters and the suspenseful parts. The book just worked from me. READ IT!

Glimmer by Beth Kery was a scorchingly hot and sexy read!!! I am completely spell-binded and bewitched with this deliciously intriguing erotically charged romance filled with twist and turns.

Glimmer is defined as a faint sign of a feeling or quality, especially a desirable one. In this erotically charged romance, Ms. Kery was able to enchant her readers on a story that was packed with so much emotions, vulnerabilities, and raw sexuality. She was able to weave so many elements of surprise, desire and sex into the story-line that you couldn't help but be mesmerized in what surprises and turn of events Ms. Kery has in store for her readers. As a reader, we are given a glimmer of love, trust, hope, desire, romance, and suspense that was brewing between Alice Reed and Dylan Fall.

Alice Reed is a recent MBA graduate who was selected among the pool of Ivy League graduates for a spot in Durand Inc. The company recruits potential candidates by having the new hires through a summer training process at the Durand camp. The camp focuses on helping under privileged kids explore their talents. Alice is among a selected few hired to help these kids. Unlike the other candidates, Alice could relate to the kids since she knew what it was like growing up on the other side of the tracks. So it completely surprised Alice that she was chosen for the summer camp spot, since she didn't graduate from an ivy league school, has no money, and no connection. But little did she knew she made quite an impression on the CEO of Durand Inc, Dylan Fall.

Dylan Fall is unlike any man that Alice has met. He intrigues her and compells her to let go and explore this new forbidden desire that has been developing between them. I am completely in love with this book. Ms. Kery did an amazing job in writing such an intriguing romance that was so raw. I loved that Ms. Kery was able to weave elements into this book that kept you compelled in wanting to know more of Alice and Dylan. Glimmer was such an addictive read that I can't wait to see what Ms. Kery has in store for Alice and Dylan in Glow. A fun read

Dora Carridine hates her evangelist father’s TV show and has been testing boundaries her whole life. When she sneaks out of the TV taping to summon a demon by using a secret ingredient obtained on eBay (misspelled Ebay: there are a fair number of careless spellings), the church audience is frightened by smoke, flames, and demonic serpents. The demon that she summoned turns out to be a handsome blond teenager named Kieron Lascher, who is so unskilled at evil that he will be exiled from Hell if he fails the test again this year. After Dora’s parents and the townspeople attempt to burn her at the stake, she’s off to Hell to meet Kieron’s rather alarming family and attend Demon Academy.

Like its predecessor, the book is LOL funny in places (e.g., during the serpent attack Dora’s mother promises God to be faithful and end her affair with “Phil on camera four”/she forgot to replace the printer cartridge so that the last legible phrase of the printed exorcism ritual is “God is frightening”). Dora is an engaging and entertaining character because of her irreverence, defiance, and basic vulnerability. The characters and events are original (although the vulgarity does get a bit repetitive: bird s***, dragon s***, etc.). The plot has clever twists and a surprise ending, leading into the next book.

Dora Is My New Favorite Teen Heroine

She's smart, smart mouth, alert, observant, vulnerable, kick ass, insecure, lovelorn, wise and immature. She is irreverent in the literal sense, (so be warned if you are sensitive to jokes at the expense of organized religion). She is a kaleidoscope of teen girl emotions, wrapped up in a hard candy coating. You root for her, you get a kick out of her, you just want to hear what happens next. This is not a surprise since the author's other books, (like Whatever Became of the Squishies? (The Squishies Series Book 1) also feature strong teen heroines, but Dora has a little something extra that you have to like. And she is certainly a great antidote for an excess of lame, passive, swoony, or just mean and snarky, heroines that I've been running into lately.

It helps that Dora narrates the book. You get a lot of snappy dialogue, (and every character does get some good lines), but then you also get Dora's commentary on the action, which is usually measured, thoughtful and even a bit deadpan. So you get manic action, backed up by wry observations and reflections, and the combination of the two keeps the book from being breathlessly one note.

The plot isn't all that important. Dora is repressed and oppressed by her televangelist father; so, she wants to be a witch; she tries a demon summoning spell; it works; she ends up with a gorgeous, (or is he?), blue eyed demon. Complications ensue.

And here's an additional thought. This book is really mainly a teen comedy of manners. Example: sure, Dora has just been transported to Hell and is being delivered to her demon's family castle, where she is unwelcome. But, strip away the demon stuff and the Hell stuff, and we basically have a new girlfriend meeting her new boyfriend's parents for the first time. The demon Dad, the sociopath Mom, the first formal dinner together, the inane small talk while they all size each other up under the boyfriend's watchful nervous eyes -the whole dynamic is real and relatable, though viewed through the wildly skewed and exaggerated lens of the madcap story. Everything is exaggerated and bigger than life and hilariously inappropriate and odd and interpreted through the author's manic imagination, but it's still just a comedy of manners familiar to any teen. I think that's what makes this more than just a funny novel and what makes this appealing to so many of the readers who have left comments here. Meeting the demonic potential in-laws is like Hell. Ms. Chilton just takes that literally.

So, if you'd like to try something fresh, a bit edgy, but still at bottom very good humored, and funny, this could be a nice choice. (If you like samples, there is a functioning sample on the Kindle page for this book but not on the paperback page. Go figure.)

We have heard a lot of bad comments about this book, and a few good things, so at first we were doubtful about reading Demonic Dora. But we have to say that we liked this book. We enjoyed reading it.
Ohh, just to make it clear, we are saying this, not because bloggers that make bad reviews go straight to hell, as the book says, but because this book was really funny. Talking about going to hell, we thought it was hilarious that the author has included the reviewers. Ok, it may not be as people would like, but we think that it was not intended to offend us, au contraire, it was to make us laugh, kind of twisted, but really it was awesome!

As for the characters, we do not really fell in love with the main character Dora, it was kind of repellent. The way she acted was not the way a teenagers do, but she has her moments, like when she felt pity of a little depressed demon. It is not that we hate her, but her behavior is not rational! What would you do if a crowd wants to burn you alive? YES of course, wait for them to come to you! OH, COME ON!

Another thing that did not fit at all, was the fact that her father was not concerned about people in town wanting to burn her daughter alive, because she is a witch or so is told, but he was in favor. Ok, we know that really bad things are happening now, but we are not in the inquisition time, this is the XXI century, we do not burn people just because they are “witches”.
Now you should be asking why we liked the book, it was because of Kieron and Pooey, every time Kieron said or did something, it was just amusing. He is the typical teenager, horny, and that only wants to get into Dora’s pants. Moreover, that was what makes the book enjoyable, because we are a little bit sick of perfect boys who just want to wait until marriage and that everything is rainbows and butterflies.
And don’t make us talk about that little-impertinent-lovely demon Pooey. He was just awesome. How he complains about almost everything, how he is afraid to be eaten by Kieron’s mother and that he turns out to be not a helpless demon.

We won’t get much more into this book than we have already done, because we may not be able to stop writing, and then we would make you a really big spoiler. So if you have read bad comments about Demonic Dora as we did, give it a chance, we are so sure that it will be a really fun and entertaining reading. Saying this, we look forward to a second book!

That is why we are giving this book four dolls, it is and "Enjoyed it low", it could have been more, but there were some things that did not fit at all.
