I have to disagree with the other reviewer. Firstly it is about dance rather than music and secondly, if the first reviewer read more than an extract he would realize Pietrobruno credits Puerto Ricans. This is a useful book for anybody interested in the cultural influence of salsa.

Ms. Pietrobruno's is NOT qualified to write about elevator music much less write about Latin Music

I had the misfortune to read an excerpt of Ms. Pietrobruno's book. To be succinct: Ms. Pietrobruno was biased to say the least when you stated that Puerto Rican musicians "lacked creativity" and were not responsible for Salsa's evolution that took place in the 60's/70's. Ms. Pietrobruno w/a name like that, you shouldn't be allowed to write about elevator music, much less about Latin music. How pathetic.

Soon everyone is hatching plots to get what they want: Owen needs help from Pierre's world-class wine business if he is ever going to sell his Nebraska vintage; Pierre wants Iona; Natalie thinks she wants Dick Tupper, but maybe it's Dick who wants Iona, and Natalie who wants Pierre? The fun and surprises are many in this playful romance.

Ersatz French culture and aw-shucks Americana collide in this corny romantic comedy, a flat-footed departure from form by National Book Award finalist Hansen (Mariette in Ecstasy, etc.). Natalie Clairvaux, a Paris librarian specializing in Americana at the Bibliotheque Nationale, embarks on a grassroots See America bus tour of out-of-the-way U.S. landmarks in an effort to escape the unwanted attentions of her philandering fiance, Pierre Smith, scion of a family of French wine sellers. Maddened by her unexplained disappearance, Pierre tracks her down and catches up with her tour group in Omaha. The quarreling couple abandons the tour at a tiny crossroads outside of Seldom, Neb. (pop. 395), on Wednesday, agreeing that Natalie will reach a decision about their wedding by noon Saturday. In Seldom, the couple is immediately elected king and queen of an annual local festival honoring a Frenchman who founded the town, and all manner of rather predictable fun and games begins. Pierre is quartered with Owen Nelson, whose penchant for wine making is second only to his obsession with Cornhusker football. Disillusioned Natalie is soon captivated by handsome Dick Tupper, a 50-year-old rancher. And, true to form, womanizing Pierre starts hitting on Iona Christiansen, a comely waitress at the local cafe. A wine tasting for hayseeds, a bachelor party (and bridal shower) and a brace of bungled trysts are a few of the stale devices driving this perfunctory farce. The subtitle suggests that Hansen knows this is a lesser effort, and readers will concur with the analysis.

Literary luminary Hansen (Hitler's Niece) has written a short, funny novel not unlike what's available nowadays from good romance writers-except that it's by a man and it costs a whole lot more than a mass market or trade paperback would. (And note that it's novella size, with large margins.) In love with all things American, young Frenchwoman Natalie Clairvaux eschews an August holiday in the south of France and heads for the United States, where she journeys by bus to see la vraie Am rique ("the real America"). Boyfriend Pierre thinks that she's folle ("insane") but nonetheless follows her. An impulsive moment strands them in Seldom, NE, where a cast of zany characters reminiscent of television shows like Ed or Northern Exposure takes center stage. This entourage is led by a sexy waitress named Iona, who falls for Pierre, and Iona's heartthrob, Dick Tupper, who falls for Natalie. That staple of romance, the misunderstanding, leads to the town's preparing for Natalie's marriage to Pierre or is it Dick? Suffice it to say that true love triumphs, and all ends very well indeed. This light, charming, and humorous romp will bring a smile to the face of even the most love-jaded reader. Highly recommended for all collections.

Beautiful, self-possessed Parisian Natalie Clairvaux, a lover of all things American, decides to assuage her hurt feelings over her fiance's latest infidelity by taking a trip to the U.S. Appalled at Natalie's destination choice, the local travel agent grudgingly books her on a Greyhound See America tour, whose highlights include the world's largest buffet. When her fiance, Pierre, comes after her, they end up stranded by a flat tire in Seldom, Nebraska, and are lovingly embraced by the town's eccentric citizens. Pierre is introduced to the home brew of a local wine aficionado, whose product is labeled with the complete Husker football scores for that vintage. Natalie is courted by an affable rancher, while Pierre is seduced by a very sexy waitress. Amid much door-slamming and a whirl of cultural confusion, the true romantic partners are eventually sorted out. All's well that ends well in this antic pastoral, which actually owes more to Preston Sturges' screwball films than to Shakespeare's comedies. Hansen shows the true reach of his talent, displaying a rare deft touch in an inspired comedy that will have readers laughing out loud. Completely charming. Joanne Wilkinson

Typically wonderful Ron Hansen writing!

What a delightful book! I bought it on the strength of the great review I read yesterday in the New York Times. Hansen is a master storyteller and does a wonderful job with this lighthearted and terrific read. I've loved all of the rest of his books (especially "Mariette in Ecstacy") and while this one is a departure for him (that is, romantic comedy) it's a winner.

Flows like a classic Lombard-Gable film

This short (under 200p) little romance by Ron Hansen is the story of a pair of French lovers on a bus trip across America. As they bicker their way into the Heartland, they plop down in Nebraska and talk on and on, trying to decide if they should marry. It's silly, witty, brainless, irreverent, and laugh-out-loud funny. Of course it's not serious literature, but it's great, great, great. Just have a cup of hot chocolate and a few chocolate chip cookies, settle down in a cozy spot, and enjoy yourself. But be careful not to spill the hot chocolate: guffaws will spring up unannounced.

A hilarious French romp through the Midwest...

This is the only book I've ever read that reads just like a movie script -- and this is a good thing! Ron Hansen has written an exciting, hilarious story that would fit perfectly on a movie screen without having to chop out any scenes. I loved it; it was entertainment at its finest.
Isn't it Romantic? tells the story of a French couple, Natalie Clairevoux, and her fiance, Pierre Smith, as they journey across America on a bus tour. Natalie, fed up with Pierre's loverboy ways, has decided to take the vacation of her dreams -- alone. But Pierre tracks her down in Omaha, wondering what in the heck? Pierre's cosmopolitian, European self doesn't belong amidst Midwest corn fields, so certainly this vacation of Natalie's must be a joke, right? Some sort of punishment for his waywardness? Then the bus breaks down in Seldom, Nebraska -- population 395 -- and the fun really begins. Stranded in the middle of nowhere, Natalie and Pierre are taken in by the friendly, quirky residents of this sleepy, peaceful town.
I laughed so much at the madcap scenes in this book. I can totally visualize the actions in my head in perfect detail. The citizens of Seldom are one of a kind, especially Owen, who has dreams of marketing his Nebraska wine, and Carlo, the cook at the caf�, who embarks on a matchmaking mission. Ron Hansen did an incredible job bringing these characters to life, and I will be looking for the movie adaptation in the future (hopefully!).

Inspiring story of a remarkable young woman

I was delighted to run across this biography in a used bookstore, having read it in the early 1980s as well as the earlier Reader's Digest article on Ms. Patty Wilson.

Patty helped inspire other disabled athletes as well as epileptics in her quest to set running records and educate others about the reality of living with epilepsy. Although 26 years old, this book is still most definitely worth a read. I've thought of Patty many times over the years and hope she went on to have a wonderful life. Five stars.

I couldn't even finish...

...this book reminds me of high school drama that was completely unnecessary. The characters are two adults that by this point in their lives should know how to communicate. The non-sense of the back and forth and on again off again was very very juvenile. Very disappointed!

This author had a lot of problems with detail consistency in this series, especially timelines-terrible. I was able to get past that in order to read the the story. Missing details or details that should've been expanded upon. Location details and age details very inconsistent. There were points in this series where I thought I was reading something written by a high school student.
For this whole series I would prolly rate it two stars maybe two and a half. I am sorry to this author because you probably feel you put a lot of work into these books but as the reader I don't feel that way.

In with a bang, out with a whimper

Cthulhu Tales Omnibus collects several of the first issues of Cthulhu Tales into one big volume (I think the other Cthulhu Tales non-omnibus volumes only have 2 or 3 issues).

The three stars is for the art and creativity. It's a lot of fun to experience Cthulhu in a variety of different settings, from the ultra serious to tongue in cheek, like an elementary school rendition of the King in Yellow.

What kills me, however, is that without fail, every single one of these stories begins with a bang, and trickles off with a whimper. Literally, every single story sets up this great premise, and then fizzles out into a non-ending. OK, sure, LOTS of Lovecraft end with a character simply going mad, but most of the time, it's a final revelation that sends the narrator over the edge. Here, it's like the author was writing the story, realized he only had one page left, and then simply ended it with a two or three panel quick fix. It really sucks, because ANY attempt to come up with a proper ending would be extremely welcome - there are a few that come close, but barely.

Anyway, I'm not one of these purists complaining about a lack of Lovecraft style - I love delving into all worlds Cthulhu, humorous or morose. BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try to write future stories with actual endings!!!

Sixteen year old Sally Anders seems to have a normal life. She sings in the church choir, babysits and has the occasional arguments whith her younger brother. However, when she doesn't return from babysitting one night, a search is conducted and her body is found. She had been raped and murdered by the home of the family for which she was babysitting.

The story is told in brief sequences of people's thoughts and reactions to Sally's murder.

In gives a picture of life in a small New England town which has a ficticious name but is actually Guilford, Connecticut where the author lived and served elected office.

We are given a step by step account of people's activities around the time of the murder. This approach doesn't give the reader any insight into Sally's thoughts and there is never an emotional sympathy for the character. It is as if the reader was viewing the information in a newspaper.

The book was written in 1989 and that was the year that Hillary Waugh was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writer's of America.

Agatha Christie said of her book ABSENT IN THE SPRING (a non-mystery published under a pseudonym) "It was a book I HAD to write." I suspect Hillary Waugh felt the same about this book, even though he knew it would be a disappointment to some of his fans. This is no tightly-written police procedural showing the shrewd, tenacious police chief and his men slowly and remorselessly closing in on a killer. This book was written to spotlight a phenomenon that Waugh had observed over decades - the fact that any serious crime (particularly a murder) sets off shock waves that affect far more than the victim and the victim's family.

The small town of Crockford, Connecticut seems caught in a time warp. Although it's 1968, the lovely town green with a church on three of the four corners could be a scene from colonial times. It's a town where doors are left unlocked and no one worries about children going places unaccompanied. Where Yale professors buy homes for the small town atmosphere and the easy drive to New Haven. Where there's no child abuse, no illegal drugs, and no racism. Where the men are prosperous professionals and their wives are, well, wives.

But the brutal rape and murder of a quiet, well-behaved teen-aged girl starts the shock waves. A drifter catches a lucky break and suddenly friends and neighbors are wondering how much they really know about each other. Like fellow New Englander Shirley Jackson, Waugh knew the panic and savagery that lie just below the surface of civilization. And once events are set in motion, the results are horrific and lives are destroyed.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I have Waugh's others, but it's a well-written and thought provoking book. I think he accomplished what he set out to do and no writer can ask for more than that. It's worth digging up a copy and reading it.

About the Author
David Stevens-Castro grew up in Chile playing in the vineyards on his grandfathers farm and inspired by his Aunt and Uncles wine analysis laboratory. Fast forward a few decades, with a degree in Agricultural Science under his belt (specialising in fruit and wine production) and a passion for food and wine in his belly, David set out exploring Australia and enriched his career as a sommelier in several five star locations. These days he is a highly respected wine expert, whos admirable palate is regularly employed for food and wine selection and menu design. Meanwhile Fran Flynn honed her skills in all things creative in the Emerald Isle of Ireland - before setting off on adventures that meadered through five continents. After working her way up through many creative agencies, this award winning photographer and designer settled in Australia and has enjoyed ten years running her own successful business. Their worlds collided on the salty, sunny, romantic, stage of Byron Bay, Australia and eight years later (now living on the Gold Coast, Australia) they have combined their skills to present what they know and love with a narrative that is unique, compelling and accessible to everyone.

Beautiful and informative

"Paired," by the husband and wife team of David Stevens-Castro and Fran Flynn, is a beautifully put-together book that contains an informative discussion of sparkling wines and the foods with which they pair. As someone who is more familiar with craft beer and still wine (and their pairings with food) than I am with sparkling wines, I was glad to receive this book in exchange for writing an honest review. I was not disappointed.

The layout is excellent. The pictures of the food were taken by Fran, and they are positively mouth-watering. They made me want to try my hand at them, even if I didn't have any sparkling wine on hand with which to pair them. (The recipes that accompany these pictures may take a bit of work, but they are not all that difficult, which, as far as I'm concerned, is always a selling point.) But what impressed me the most is the amount of information on the different types of sparkling wines (e.g., champagne, cava, prosecco, moscato, etc.), the region they come from, how they differ, the different methods used to create the bubbles, and what terms such as extra brut, brut, sec, vintage, reserve, etc. mean. This book is a great primer on sparkling wines, spelled out in a way that is clear and easy to understand. I came away from this book feeling that I had gained a great deal of knowledge about something of which I had been quite ignorant.

The layout of "Paired" is stunningly attractive and shows that a lot of thought went into it. The book is attractive enough to be prominently displayed on the coffee table.

Having read this first volume, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing future volumes (on white wines and red wines), which the authors tell us are in the works.

Extremely well thought out and beautifully illustrated book. The idea may seem simple for most of us but sometimes is not. How to know to best put Champagne (or even to choose the right one in the first place) with the right food for the right occasion can be tricky or luck. Now there is a great reference to turn to when planning any occasion or simply to try champagne in a new light without it having to be just for a celebration which was my association before reading the book. Much about Champagne to explore now.

Every recommendation is thoughtfully considered and you can't but want to open a bottle and go eat some of the foods that are so visually palatable and stunning. The detailed information about the types of Champagne and correlation to foods are awesome. Thank you for the ideas, recommendations and knowledge shared.

About the Author
Pres Maxson is a career copywriter. Bender at the Bon Parisien is his first novel. He lives in Indiana with his wife and two daughters. Pres and his wife were back-to-back petanque tournament champs at Indiana's Bastille Day celebration in 2014 and 2015. The tournament was cancelled in Indiana in 2016, but they are confident that they would have three-peated.

Fun Mystery

Bender at the Bon Parisien by Pres Maxson is mysterious and suspenseful. It is a story of one night at a hotel bar told with flashbacks presented by various characters. The flashbacks give readers a glimpse into the character/narrator as well as some key clues in the mystery. The story is told primarily from the point of view of Peter, a visiting American, and since he has the least knowledge of the pieces of the puzzle, his view of what is happening is sometimes surreal.

Peter, a journalist, and his wife, Janie, a poet-student, accidentally play host to a myriad of quirky characters at the Bon Parisen bar on the evening in question. Although Peter is a primary narrator of the story, we really don’t get to know him (or Janie) all that well. Opera singer, Trudel, street performer, Pistache, and clock maker, Fleuse are mourning their missing and assumed-dead friend, Victor, when the antics begin. These characters are slowly developed—or revealed—as the evening progresses and the action begins.

My favorite quote from the book is a little note that Janie has jotted on a cocktail napkin: “Bees’ hearts beat faster when there’s honey in the hive.” It would seem that all the characters in this book are busy little bees.

Bender at the Bon Parisien is filled with quirky characters, predictable and surprising plot points, and a fabulously untidy ending. I enjoyed the pace of the story and chaos of the scenes. I immensely disliked the required suspension of disbelief required to think that no one in the hotel was suspicious of the noise and commotion in the “closed for business” lobby bar. Chapter headings that clue the reader into the fact that they’re “re-reading” a scene from another characters point of view would have been helpful. Overall, a fun read that I would rate 3.5 to 4 stars.

As a former bar manager I felt compelled to review this book because it has a feel of off-kilterness. It's funny in a quirky and Wes Anderson way... but somehow a little more realistic. The pages go by quickly and the storyline just works. Good friggin book.

A Book Club must read!

This will be a great book for discussion and it’s the best I’ve read in a long time. Pres uses prose as a guide to transport us to a small bar in a hotel in Paris. The setting is so vividly created that it just feels real. After getting to know the two Americans, Janie and Pete, a fascinating and imaginative group of French characters is introduced. I was fully engulfed as the suspense mounted and the story evolved with unexpected twists and some laughable circumstances.

Pres takes a daring approach to writing as he fills in the backstory with a different person’s perspective as events unfold. It works. The story is creative and complex, but it’s an easy read that I found hard to put down. My greatest compliments to the author!
