Overall an intriguing and well written story but with a personal agenda attached.
By william c ubben
Overall a very well written story with a dynamic plot albeit some teenage twists. Characters are well developed and the story will keep you interested. For me though it seemed as if the writter had a personal agenda with Christianity and kept interlacing it throughout the book. Also at some points the story seemed exceptionally graphic when not needed and would at dip deeply into "young adult" verbiage. I must say that this is the best written story to present and explore the "curse" as a true horrific possession of the bearer's soul. So well written and plotted as to be extremely impressive and intellectualy compelling.

Engaging From Beginning To End!!
By Monique Lomino
The plot of this story held my attention from beginning to end. Nick,a teenage boy is bitten by a wolf and almost dies, when he recovers he is changed forever. He finds out that supernatural creatures are not myth but real. The author even gives the reader a lesson on the beginnings of the werewolf and his take on it is positively brilliant. This is a fantastic book, well written and engaging, exactly what a book junkie like myself looks for. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great story.

A great read
By Lorraine
A great, dark read from beginning to end.
The best way I can describe it is as a book of two halves.
The first half is about a teenagers difficult adjustment to becoming a werewolf, even though he had always wanted to be one.
The second half is more action packed as the body count rises and the undead battle to survive the slayers.
The characters were well written and the story kept me guessing.
I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.

Review
"Cook and Newson have written an extremely clear and highly comprehensible introduction to current syntactic theory. This text makes accessible many subtleties of linguistic argumentation, and explains in plain English the reasoning involved. The second edition greatly improves on the first edition, both in depth and scope, with much new material added and many confusing points clarified. The chapter on the "Minimalist Programme" is the most lucid explication of Chomsky's recent writings that I am aware of."
--Steven Franks, Indiana University

From the Back Cover
The theory of Universal Grammar is central to the concerns of present-day linguistics. The book is intended as an introduction for those who want a broad overview of the theory with sufficient detail to see how its main concepts work. The new edition of this highly successful textbook incorporates recent developments in the field.

Chomsky's Universal Grammar introduces both the general concepts of the theory, particularly its goals of describing the knowledge of language and of accounting for how it is acquired, and the main areas of syntax such as X-bar theory, movement and government. Like the first edition, it puts the technicalities of the theory in the context of its wider ideas in a manner that makes them accessible to the student. The new edition is based on the current model of syntax that is most widely accepted, incorporating Barriers syntax, functional categories, and Relativized Minimality, and their implications for language acquisition. Further, it provides a sketch of the model in the process of development, the Minimalist Programme, with its attempt to reduce the theory to the minimal essentials.

About the Author
Vivian Cook is Reader in Linguistics at the University of Essex and Mark Newson is Senior Lecturer in the School of English and American Studies at Eotuos Lorand University, Hungary.

excellent intro to GB for non-linguists
By A Customer
Although I am not a Chomskyan, I personally am fond of this book. It is well-written and lucid, presenting basic Government & Binding theory in terms that are very easy to understand. I doubt a single non-technical introduction to generative grammar of this brevity and clarity has yet been written (far superior to Pinker's hand-waving in _The Language Instinct_), and I recommend it to anyone, non-generative linguist and non-linguist alike, who is interested in current mainstream linguistics in North America.

However, Cook does seem worshipful of Chomsky to a degree that is just short of disturbing; Chomsky is frequently quoted more as authority than for argument, and does indeed appear on almost every page. The overall affect was, for me, disquieting.

It is also, of course, no longer accurate: "Chomsky's" Universal Grammar is now the Minimalist Program, which is handled only by a final, tacked-on chapter. Cook should completely update this book with a third edition that starts with Chomsky's current theory from the beginning.

A Transition Help from GB to MP
By Gu Gang
The Government and Binding Theory (GB), though Chomsky prefers it to be called the Principle and Parameter Theory, is the most popular version of Chomsky's grammar in 1980s'. This book is an easy reading to cover every important part of GB. All significant terms are highlighted in a shaded block, which is very convenient for the reader to check up. In particular, the last chapter of the book provides a brief but clear explanation for the current version of Chomsky's theory, i.e., the Minimalist Program (MP). The chapter is a good help for the reader who want to transit from GB to MP, though he would be quite surprising to see that almost all key concepts in GB, such as D-structure, S-structure, Government, disappear in MP. This is a good introductory book both about the GB and MP framework.

From Booklist
Colan was one of Marvel Comics' key artists in the late 1960s and the 1970s, best known for a lengthy run on the superhero title Daredevil and his stint on the groundbreaking satire Howard the Duck. He is most closely associated with The Tomb of Dracula, which ran for seven years in the seventies. He fit uneasily in Marvel's lineup of superhero artists, for his realism ran counter to his peers' stylized approaches, and his mastery of light and darkness seemed less suited to the genre than, say, the bold simplicity of a Jack Kirby. Colan's star waned as fans' tastes changed, but he continued to work steadily in the field, even when that meant wasting his talents drawing Archie. Nearing 80, he remains at the drawing board today. Field, a longtime fan, thoroughly traces Colan's career (the segment on the 1950s comics industry is particularly fascinating) through biography, interviews, and page after page of everything from original comic-book pages to previously unseen fan commissions. Outstanding!
By R. Gale
I have very little to add to what the other reviewers have already said. If you're a fan of Gene Colan, this book is a must-have. Even if you're not a big Colan fan, you'll learn a lot about the business of comics and how personalities and personal relationships affected the comics we grew up with. It's well written, well documented and contains a tremendous amount of research and (of course) lots of great art. (And if the author happens to read this, that very first New York comic convention was the SCARP Con in 1968 -- I, a geeky 17 year old, attended and met the gracious Mr. Colan who did a sketch of Iron Man for me, and drew dozens of sketches for other fans.) Highly recommended!

Brilliant writing and fantastic art!
By radams36
Tom Field's latest, "Secrets in the Shadows", is an absolute must-buy for any fan of Gene Colan, or of Silver age comics in general. Tom has put together a treasure trove of rare, sometimes never-before published art, from one of the greatest masters of the comic book art form.

Wonderful insight and candid anecdotes on Gene's personal life and how that impacted his art lend a real depth to the artist's history. Tom's writing style is clear and compelling, making the book very hard to put down.

An able assist from best-selling author Glen Gold adds considerably to the book, along with a terrific afterword from internationally renowned artist Mark Staff Brandl. Interviews with Gene, Stan Lee, premiere inker Tom Palmer, and acclaimed writers Steve Gerber and Marv Wolfman, provide enthralling perspective on how gratifying it was to work with Gene, both in terms of the amazing artwork he did, and in terms of what a fine and gentlemanly person Gene is.

The many illustrations show Gene's advancement as an artist, from early sketches Gene did as a child, to the masterful work he did on such books as Daredevil, Iron Man, Howard the Duck, and Tomb of Dracula. Recent commissions are shown both before and after inking, which lends great insight into how the inker affects the completed page, and how different artists approach Gene's challengingly detailed work.

This book is one great read, and is another terrific addition to the history of the Silver age from TwoMorrows publishing. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREATS
By Tim Janson
Two characters come to mind when I think of Gene Colan...Doctor Strange and Dracula. They were two of my favorites when I began reading comics in the mid-1970's. I was fortunate to have two stores close to me that sold old back issues of comic books. I was able to put together quite a collection of silver age comics. Among my favorite comics was Gene's run on the original Doctor Strange series beginning with #169. These atmospheric, psychedelic stories were unlike anything I had ever seen. I had sold my collection in the 1980's but recently picked up that complete run all over again because I was still enchanted by the great Colan work on those books.

Secrets in the Shadows is a combination biography and tribute to one of the all-time great comic artists, Gene Colan. Author Tom Field takes on a guided tour through Gene's life, beginning with his upbringing in New York and his first comic book work for Fiction House. Gene tells a story similar to many of his contemporaries such as John Buscema and John Romita, and their mass dismissal from Timely Comics. Gene would go on to DC and then back to what was now Atlas Comics. Atlas would then implode leaving Gene again out of work in the late 1950's and with a lifelong feeling of insecurity about the comic book business. As Gene explains this was a difficult time in his life as he was not only out of a job, but also had just gone through a divorce with his first wife.

Stan Lee would come beckoning again in the early 1960's as the Marvel Age was off and running. Gene quickly became one of Marvel's top artists and perhaps the only one whose style was so unique that he was not asked to pencil over Jack Kirby's layouts the way many other artists were. Field presents several conversations in the book between Gene and some of the people he worked with at Marvel. The first is a lengthy conversation from 2004 between Gene and Stan Lee. They talk about their first meeting at Timely in the 1940's. Gene mentions that Stan was wearing a beanie cap with a propeller...now that's something I'd love to see! They also discuss their creative process and how books were plotted and finished. Other conversations include Gene talking with his long-time inker Tom Palmer with whom he worked on so many great books over the years, and with Steve Gerber, the writer on Howard the Duck.

Gene worked on numerous titles at Marvel over the years, Daredevil, The Avengers, Captain America...But perhaps the title most associated with him was Dracula which had a remarkable 70 issue run in the 1970's. Colan's Dracula was dark and grim and his incredible use of light and shading gave the book a true horrific feel.

Gene would eventually leave Marvel in the early 1980's after several run-ins with then Editor-in-Chief, Jim Shooter. Shooter's tenure was marred by one controversy after another including his shameful treatment of Jack Kirby. Shooter was highly critical of Gene's work and harassed him with constant demands of changes. Gene would migrate to DC along with many other former Marvel staffers who had grown tired of Shooter including Roy Thomas, Len Wein, and Marv Wolfman. To be fair, Tom Field presents both sides in the Colan/Shooter situation. He allows Shooter to give his side of the story in which he feels he was doing what was right for the company and felt Gene was cutting corners with his work. Unfortunately Shooter's credibility is almost nil due to his run-ins with so many other artists and writers.

At DC Gene would work on Batman, Wonder Woman, Detective, and new projects such as Night Force and Nathaniel Dusk. Gene would find himself under attack again for his art, this time by John Byrne who was highly critical of Gene in a Comics Journal interview in 1982. Byrne would basically call Gene a cheat and say that 90% of the time you could not tell what was happening on the page. I credit Field for including this in the book. I would guess he knew that rather than be any kind of indictment against Gene, that it would make Byrne look like a jerk for making an unwarranted attack on a true legend. Cheat? Byrne is still giving every character that same weird looking, rectangular mouth for twenty-five years!

Gene would leave DC some years later after similar criticisms by then Editor Dick Giordano. Gene would strictly freelance from now on and even go back to work at Marvel (shooter has since been broomed himself). Today, Gene has found many new outlets for his work thanks to the internet. He's busy doing commissions for fans who truly appreciate his work.

Tom Field presents a portrait of a man who fits the nickname of "Gentleman Gene". Colan's volume of work over the last sixty years is awe-inspiring. It's great to see Gene finally getting the tribute he so justly deserves.

Business Is ART: and science, gut instinct, hard work, and a certain amount of luck, by Jon Umstead

Estimates say that as many as eight out of ten new businesses fail within the first eighteen months. More conservative estimates say that about half of new business start-ups are still in business four to five years later. In either case, the likelihood of business failure is very high. Studies prove that good planning practices more than double the chance of business success. Yet, the vast majority of small to medium sized businesses operate without a formal plan, and of those who do build a plan, only a handful carefully measure their targeted objectives and adjust their plans accordingly.

Business Is ART provides business leaders with an easy-to-follow approach to business success. The book is intended for any business owner, executive or organizational leader, but is especially designed for the small to medium sized organization. Its purpose is to provide a simple process—with templates—that business and organizational leaders can follow, from the creation of a powerful vision, to strategic business plans, to performance metrics and back again in a continuous cycle of improvement.

Created by Jon Umstead, and tested over a thirty year business career, the ART program shows business leaders how to successfully Articulate their vision, Revise their plans, and Track their progress. Umstead draws on personal anecdotes and experience, as well as wisdom from other business leaders, to create an engaging, accessible and empowering guide to business success.

An Excellent Guide To Growing Your Business!
By Gant
I'm what you would call a management/leadership book junkie. I've read over 200 books on this subject over the past 20 years. Many have a couple of good takeaways that I use, but weren't really worth the time I invested. This book is different.

The author is engaging, humorous and doesn't come off as preachy like many business authors. He share a lot of his own real-world experiences and doesn't pretend to be 100% perfect. He lays out an easy to follow, common sense, 12 step approach to building a successful business. His experiences and examples are relate-able to things I've gone through and am going through. He sprinkles humor throughout so it's an easy, quick read. There are many sample worksheets included to help you think about things visually and track your progress towards your goals. I'm already using the concepts and worksheets from this book will continue to do so in the future.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking to grow a small to medium sized organization. This is the author's first book and I hope there are more to come!

Arab Dress a Short History: From the Dawn of Islam to Modern Times (Themes in Islamic Studies), by Yedida Kalfon Stillman, Norman A. Still

This richly illustrated volume is a historical and ethnographic study of one important aspect of Arab and Islamic material culture - clothing. While in part descriptive, its principal focus is on the evolution and transformations of modes of dress over the past 1400 years throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and for the Middle Ages, Islamic Spain. Arab clothing is treated as part of an Islamic vestimentary system and is discussed within the context of the social, religious, esthetic, and political trends of each age.In addition to the five historical chapters, three chapters are devoted to major themes of Arab costume history - the dress code for non-Muslims, the important socio-economic and political institution of luxury fabrics and garments of honor, and the most well-known and frequently misunderstood institution of veiling.

Long awaited but very disappointing in places
By Jeni Allenby, Palestine Costume Archive
Long awaited and eagerly anticipated by those of us working in this area, 'Arab Dress' raises questions as to the validity and bias of the author's research and text. I can only comment on the problems I found in the small sections that deals with my own areas of knowledge - Palestinian costume - and recommend that Stillman's conclusions regarding other areas of 20th century Arab costume traditions be confirmed by other reference sources.
While Dr Stillman was indeed an acknowledged authority on medieval Arab costume and on Jewish costume in the Middle East, her husband's posthumous accreditation of her in the introduction of this book as "the world's acknowledged expert on the history of the clothing of the Arab world" is perhaps, while understandable, a little excessive. It seems unlikely that "the world's acknowledged expert" would somehow have missed listing 30 years worth of British Museum publications on Arab costume and Islamic textiles in her Bibliography.
Stillman writes that her Bibliography contains a "full conspectus of the secondary literature (together of course with references to the scattered and highly diverse primary sources) on Arab and Islamic attire and costume". On the subject of Palestinian costume alone, only one of Shelagh Weir's seven publications on the subject is listed, as is only one of Jehan Rajab's. Ziva Amir's works are entirely missing. Disturbingly, all the monographs and articles by Palestinians collecting and researching this area - Widad Kawar, Leila el Khalidi, Abu Omar, and Al-Hassan etc - are missing (these authors have at least one monograph each in English). Missing, too, are all the research publications and exhibition catalogues of the Palestinian Heritage Foundation (USA), Palestinian Heritage Center (Bethlehem), Dar el Tifl Museum (Jerusalem), and the Palestine Costume Archive (Canberra) amongst other Palestinian research organizations. As for "scattered and highly diverse primary sources" Stillman lists absolutely none of the sources in Arabic produced over the last 50 years in this field.
In her small section in 'Arab dress' on 20th century ethnographic studies, Stillman sums up a century of research on Palestinian costume in one sentence listing three exhibition catalogues and one monograph, one of which was her own publication on the subject in 1979. The others are Weir (1989) Rajab (1989)(both excellent books, yes)and what she calls an "important anthology" produced by the Institute du Monde Arabe. A quick look inside the cover of this catalogue would reveal it to be the French edition of the exhibition curated by the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne, "Pracht und Gemeimnis: kleidung und schmuck aus Palastina und Jordanien". The Institute du Monde Arabe simply had the exhibition on loan. Credit for the catalogue - and it's reference in her Bibliography (where it only found under the name of the one author who included an article about Ottoman costume - a topic of more interest to Stillman, and one which is well represented in the Bibliography) should have been to the organizing museum. This may appear petty, but it reveals careless research.
I am also concerned about her choice of illustrations and figures. Most deal with early or medieval subjects and are, I'm sure, relevant to her research interests. However, like her text on various 20th century Arab country traditions, contemporary plates are very eclectic. The Palestinian wedding jacket shown (from her 1979 publication) is a bizarre choice as it features foreign motifs and is thus in no way a traditional example. No traditional example is shown to anchor it, nor is any information given about where it is from in Palestine or why or how it was worn. As this is the only illustration of Palestinian costume it would have been nice to have had something more indicative of the culture - even a photograph of a complete outfit showing how various clothing came together would have seemed more relevant. Figure 11, an "example of the Palestinian thawb" also from her 1979 publication, again has no informative text whatsoever, and is thus misleading because thobs only came in that style from one particular area in Palestine. It is misleading to call it representative.
While Stillman makes occasional reference to Palestinian costume in her general text she appears to have undertaken no further research on the subject since her 1979 publication accompanying the exhibition held at the International Museum of Folk Art at Santa Fe. This is of some concern because an awful lot has happened in this field since that time. Apart from issues such as the rise of nationalism and the re-introduction of traditional dress as a form of passive resistance amongst Palestinian women resulting from the original intifada, there has also been huge development in the production of traditional embroidered items by various refugee aid organizations. None of this is mentioned in "Arab Dress", although it has been mentioned in the six or seven English language monographs that have been published since Stillman's 1979 book.
What worries me here is that if I can find this many problems in the one area of this publication with which I am reasonably familiar(after 19 years research)what problems may potentially exist in other areas? I don't doubt Stillman's expertise in early or medieval Islamic attire but her sections on Arab costume by country may not as informed as they first appear. Admittedly this is a posthumous book and may not, despite a labor of love on behalf of her husband, be on the form that she originally visualized publishing. Still, it is a concern when a publication such as this is promoted as an expensive reference tool, and possesses so many omissions. And that is the main problem with "Arab Dress" - omissions in the Bibliography, omissions in the text and omissions in the illustrations.
Buy it for it's historical research on the early and medieval Islamic period by all means, but for the study and illustration of 20th century Arab and Islamic costume and textile traditions, you will need additional reference sources.

For People who Make Costumes
By Betsy Pike
I found this book helpful in my ongoing research for making
medieval costumes in a number of ways. It gives correct terms for clothing and how they were worn in an historical context and how they overlap in language and region. Although the plethora of terms are at times hard to keep straight with out keeping notes. The book also helps in describing the costumes in the plates. Examples are; what country or people influenced the style or cut, the differences in the head gear, why people are wearing different head coverings, who wore boots in what time period and why they didn't in others.I wish the book had more plates for all the examples the author mentions but doesn't show.I find the reading interesting and helpful but not as complete as I would like. The bibliographical epilogue in chapter nine I thought was especially helpful for further study, but not all inclusive. For the serious costumer of the Middle East I would highly reccommend it. I find it helpful in my research for historically accurate costuming.

Arabesque Galore!
By Matt Nunn
This is a wonderful reference book, not just for the clothing and photos, but a great study of the art and life in Arab cultures. The book is well written and very precise in it's descriptions of the clothing and it's meaning and purpose. It's very well worth the money if you are a serious collector of the culture or just a fashion buff!
