My mother recommended this book to my friend when she was raising her daughter back in the 1980's. My sister felt this book was very helpful when she was raising her three boys in the 1990's. I have purchased this copy to pass on to my daughter who is struggling with her young son.

Some concepts okay, others outdated & ineffective

I'm a Christian parent and have listened to several audiobooks on parenting for my strong-willed children. While some of the concepts in Dobson's book are good old common sense, others do not seem to be effective when parenting a strong-willed child, a child with ADHD or other physical/emotional issues. And of course, the advice on spanking is controversial. If you can spank effectively, that's fine, but the truth is, most of us can't! The idea that you spank a child for discipline purposes only and not as a response to your own anger is purely theory only. How many parents do you see spanking children because they are furious and at their wit's end? Most of us can't do it effectively so there must be a better way! Try listening/reading "Raising Your Spirited Child" or "How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen to So Kids Will Talk". These books will go one step further than Dobson's book and offer alternatives to spanking.

WAIT! This is not what it appears to be!

The advertising makes this appear to be a new printing of a wonderful old book that has gone out of print. That isn't what it is at all.

An outfit called General Books took an old copy of this out-of-print book, scanned it, used a computer program to covert it into text, and then printed it out (with new pagination, bearing no relation whatever to the original pagination) and bound it. The result is a complete mess. There are misspelled words everywhere (the software apparently isn't so good at recognizing letters in older fonts); the footnotes and chapter headings were absorbed into the text; the original page numbers are lost; the table of contents is completely useless because it gives page numbers corresponding to the original pagination. There are also many apparently meaningless long strings of characters.

For example, here is how the book begins:

What a mess!

This is probably the worst produced and printed book I've seen in many years. Typos, misprints, paragraphs separated.

Note that I'm not talking about the content, which remains to be read, but rather about the production itself. It is so bad that even glancing through it immediately highlights problems - no need to look hard.

Historically important work, but dismissible for its contents

Russell's famous work is of great importance historically because it set the tone for Leibniz study for a generation. Today this tone has been completely rejected by modern Leibniz scholars. Russell's work says more about Russell than Leibniz. Russell uses Leibniz as a punching bag to push his dogma. I recommend the many papers and journal entries written over the last 100 years which basically have proven almost every major attack Russell made on Leibniz to be unjustified. Still, this book is a must read for any serious Leibniz scholar for its historical importance alone and to understand why so many scholars after Russell had the narrow interpretation of Leibniz that they did.

Wonderful Approach to Saints' Lives

"Stories of the Saints" is a new graphic series by Arcadius Press depicting lives of the saints in richly illustrated panels with fast-moving text. Volume I includes the stories of Saint Patrick, Saint Jerome Emiliani, Saint Joan of Arc, Saint Henry, and Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. These vibrant stories, which are told utilizing stunning and entertaining imagery, promise to engage readers of all ages through memorable storylines which entertain, educate and inspire.

Each saint story is introduced by a question. For example, the section on Saint Patrick begins by asking, "Would you return to the country where you had been enslaved to tell those who lived there about Christ?" while the section on Saint Joan of Arc inquires
"Do you live a life that encourages others to follow God?" These questions help establish the theme of the saint's life that the story seeks to portray. Another helpful feature is "A Saint's Journey" which is at the end of each section. It provides a chronology of events in the Saint's life as well as the date of canonization.

I shared this book with my children who enjoyed it immensely. I enjoyed it as well. I like that the series, which has three more books yet to be published, tells of both well-known and less familiar saints. This allows for readers who are well-versed in the lives of the saints to still learn something new. While the stories are brief and of necessity, much of the saint's life story must be left out, the writers and editors did a wonderful job of hitting all the crucial elements.

I heartily recommend "Stories of the Saints." With its graphic style, it has the potential to interest some who might not otherwise pick up a book on lives of the saints, while those who already enjoy saints' stories will appreciate the unique approach.

About the Author

David Eagleman is a neuroscientist, New York Times best-selling author, and Guggenheim Fellow who holds joint appointments in the Departments of Neuroscience and Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Jonathan Downar is the director of the MRI-Guided rTMS Clinic at the University Health Network Hospital in Toronto, Canada, and a scientist at the Toronto Western Research Institute. This book describes the method which Peggy Pace developed for healing adults and adolescents who experienced trauma or neglect in childhood. Lifespan Integration therapy differs from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in that LI heals and integrates the body-minds of clients in multifaceted ways. LI therapy clears trauma memory and the defenses against early trauma throughout the body-mind. This is true even for cases when the trauma was pre-verbal and is not explicitly remembered. LI therapy can also be used to increase positive self-regard, to improve affect regulation, and to strengthen the core self. In her book, Pace describes how her Lifespan Integration method can be used to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety and panic disorders, mood disorders, and eating disorders. In the chapter which discusses using LI to heal Dissociative Identity Disorder, Pace describes how Lifespan Integration therapy brings more coherence to the fragmented self systems of dissociated clients, eventually resulting in a unified self. The Lifespan Integration book includes a summary of recent discoveries in the field of neuroscience. Pace overviews what is known about how separated selves and self states become integrated within the developing child. Pace proposes in her book that neural integration continues throughout the lifespan, and can be expedited during therapy when the conditions required for neural integration are re-created within the therapeutic setting. Depuis 2004, elle partage son temps entre son activite privee dans l'Etat de Washington et des formations sur la methode de l Integration du Cycle de la Vie aux Etats-Unis et en Europe. Elle a notamment presente l Integration du Cycle de la Vie aux congres de l Association Internationale d EMDR (2003), de l Association Canadienne d EMDR (2006), et a la conference de l'ACEP (Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology) (2006).

Very intriguing method.

Although this book was written by and for therapists (with lots of information about the science behind the method) it is well written and very accessible. If you want a good overview of the origins of Lifespan Integration, this is the book for you.
