Power to the people

This book is easy to understand for anyone that has a basic knowledge of computer languages. It walks you through the processes of how to make your own scripts for Second Life using the LSL language. It proves that the writer had thought everything that he or she was going to write about before hand and the scripts they where going to use before organizing the contents in this book. If your a Second Life fanatic and your looking for a good book to teach you how to do the dreaded and all powerful skill of scripting, I recommend this book.

Great advice for real people

One of my resolutions for this year was to reduce the amount of procrastination that unfortunately I find occurs in various areas of my life.

From the very first page of this book I felt motivated and before I was half way through I knew that I had found the correct book to help me with the matter of procrastinating.

The author breaks down the matter of procrastination into nice little “bite size” pieces thus making the process of getting something done, or even started, easier.

I liked this book a lot as I felt I finally found a book with a real plan for real people.

People joke about being distracted by cat videos on the internet instead of using their time effectively, however, this genuinely seemed to be a problem for me.

I have a busy year coming up with a change to find my graduate masters degree. However, because a lot of my research is internet based I find myself flicking over to websites I shouldn't be on. I've even decided that I enter some sort of time void.

This book has completely changed everything, it has the best tips I have ever read for concentrating, focusing and utilising my time. A highly effective and brilliantly written book.

He gets down to the seconds!

I gave this book 4 stars for many reason. The first reason I gave this 4 stars because I had an amazing breakthrough. Although I've procrastinated throughout my life as a student/other areas of life, I never knew how to stop and what I could do to stop. This book is amazing because the writer gets down to the second(with just a few tiny grammatical errors, that i found hard to understand, but nonetheless) I believe with this book, the willingness to change, positive reaffirming affirmations you can truly stop procrastinating. Thank you Arthur Joyce I hope to see more.

A Magnificent Saga of a Dark World

I just finished reading Tigana today and I must say that I loved it.
The first chapter starts very slowly. But I slogged through it, and by the time I was a few chapters in I was totally hooked. The story builds slowly, but it does build, and by the last chapter of the book I could hardly breathe because I was so eager to find out what happened.
The story is not predictable. I like complex stories like this that take lots of twists and turns, and contain significant surpises. I also like books like this that mostly deal with shades of grey instead of black and white, because they make you think. Often while reading Tigana I had to put the book down to think for a few moments if a character had been justified for doing something. I felt every bit as much sympathy for Brandin and Dianora, because their deplorable actions were done with love in mind, as I felt for Alessan and his group. This is like real life, where bad guys and good guys rarely exist.
Kay's writing contains a message of compassion for all people. But there was one character I really disliked and could feel no sympathy for: Alberico, not only because he killed so many innocent people gruesomely because he seemed to have no feelings at all, no soul, only a cold meaninless ambition. He didn't care about anything except his desire to be Emperor.
As well as the dark and pensive themes of the book, I enjoyed Kay's writing style as always. Although his poetic prose sometimes borders on melodrama he has the power to take my breath away. Rarely do I read a book and want to read certain lines over and over again because they're so beautiful.
The book is full of memorable scenes that are dripping with strong emotion. I felt everything along with the characters: the fear, the pain, the helplessness, the love and elation. I don't think I've ever read another author who conveys such depths of emotion as Kay.
If you like shocking surprises you'll like this book, because it contains quite a few. My jaw dropped open more than once!
All in all a great book that I'll always remember. Kay is a master of emotional, poignant writing that also makes you think. If you're willing to dedicate some time to this book (it's on the long side) as well as some mindpower (it's not something you can breeze through) then you won't be sorry.

One of the best fantasy stories.

I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction. Tigana is one of the best stories I've read. I think it is Guy Gavriel Kay's best work. (Much better than the Fionivar Tapestry.) Follow the struggle of the heroes of Tigana, a country defeated in war, as they try to liberate their homeland and exact retribution on its conqueror.

Against All Odds Tiganans Come Back!

"Tigana" (1990) is what's usually defined, as a Fantasy book. Yet IMHO is more than that.
Guy Gavriel Kay (b. 1954, Canadian) has researched thoroughly Italy's historical & geographical background in order to give life to The Peninsula of the Palm he describes in a sort of "alternate universe", so similar and so different of our own world.

Guy Gavriel Kay is a character's goldsmith, and gives accurate and sensible picture of each of them. Not only the main ones but even the short-lived fleeing personas are treated with deepness and care.

Kay has a special knack to depict scenes that lead the reader to jump to conclusions that are, astonishingly, proved wrong a couple of pages later, this keep you reading on tiptoes, expecting new surprises... and they show up even if you are warned.

The story is about a land subject to two Tyrants that had split the Peninsula's realms in two and had been facing each other for the last twenty years trying to device some trick to unbalance and defeat the rival.
Meanwhile the subjugated people of the defeated kingdoms seem unable to rebel and resigned to suffer. However there is one kingdom worst treated of them all: after devastating all their cities, the Wizard Tyrant, has cast a spell over the land that forbids its name to be spoken & understand by anyone except the few survivors of Tigana.
A small band of people from Tigana and all the other realms start little by little a resistance movement combining very different abilities and interests to try to overthrow the Tyrants.
The book is the chronicle of their struggle.

The descriptions of cities, rural places, king's courts, taverns and markets have a distinctive flavor, without being boring. The different characters are fully human and interesting, not two dimensional stereotypes as may be expected in Fantasy story. The inner thoughts of most of them are shown, giving insight as to why they do what they do.

This is a book to be enjoyed by different kind of readers and they won't be disappointed at all!

Good for an agent desk

As a production assistant, I found some of the material useful. I think it's more for a development office or an agent's desk.
It's a good book to help people decide if they really want to enter the entertainment industry.

Adequate for basics, but not first book on the shelf.

This was actually the first book I had ever read when preparing for my career search in the talent agent realm. There were a few reasons for this. First of all, I knew so much that this was a beginning stage of breaking into the career (if not the mailroom, of course). Second, it's an easy read. A concise 208 pages broken into 86 separate chapters. I love reading books like that because it's easy to feel accomplished when you crack away at 5 chapters in a day in your spare time! Third, it seemed like a good way to get a broad perspective on what it's all about being an assistant, or the agent itself. Finally, and most importantly, I found myself in a situation where I could put these rules to use, which made them much easier to comprehend and capitalize upon.

The book is broken into 5 major parts that serve to lead you to situations as they would (supposedly) happen in your actual career. As we know, nothing is predictable. I did find some of the lingo to be interesting and good to know, though I'm not sure everything they say is important in the book really is.

A lot of the content itself is nothing shocking, but it does allow you to consider whether this is something you really want to consider as a starting point of a career. Look, you might not love it, but it's temporary, as long as you stick to it and give it your all at least.

Mostly, just keep conscious of the lessons and take notes on what you really need to. That's subjective to everyone, of course. For me, I was unfamiliar with some of the terminology used on occasions, so I made a point to note that. However, I already know how to deal with certain personalities, and I don't get star-struck, so those sections I breezed by.

If you have the choice, I'd say to start, read The Agency, then The Mailroom, then this one only if you can start to apply the concepts while reading, or shortly after reading this. It's an easy and cheap read, so I wouldn't dismiss it altogether.

E! TV happened to feature the book in a short segment. I must say, it was an awful representation of the book. The book really is more geared towards being an assistant to an agent rather than directly to celebrities, as this segment seems to be geared towards. But hey, that's Hollywood.

Decent Content, Annoying Delivery

I didn't care for this book. Didn't finish it. I had to read it for a class at film school. Overall most of the advice was fine (if a little basic) but it was written in such a snarky, I'm-more-clever-than-you tone that it was hard to get in to. (I had the same problem with Snyder's "Save The Cat") I'm sure if you can get passed the style, there is information to glean here. But I just couldn't do it.

Give me more of this.....

Clean, clear and to the point, Ray Huang provides an extraordinary examination of one of those "turning point" or "watershed" years we tend to recognize only in hindsight. Chinese vocabulary and terms are kept to a minimum, press into service only when it supports the goals of the passage. Though the book is historic in nature, the author forces no judgements but allows the reader to develop their own conclusions about the nature of the events that took place. We could do a lot worse to have more of this sort of writing on what can be a very muddled and turbulent portion of the Human story.

Amazing portrait of life in the Ming court

I had to read a number of works on late imperial China for a project, and this was by far the most enjoyable, and one of the most illuminating. A group portrait of life in the court of the Wanli emperor, it provides an indelible image of reformers struggling, always in vain, against a tottering, corrupt political bureaucracy that thwarted them at every turn. Huang made me feel like I was peering over the courtiers' shoulders as the imperial system, which had lasted for so many centuries, finally collapsed.

The only reason not to give it five stars is that, in organizing each chapter around a single person, Huang necessarily crossed the same ground a number of times, which made the book seem, here and there, a bit repetitious. But this is a fine piece of work, always interesting and often enthralling. I've never read another book like it.
