The Wisdom of Oz: Using Personal Accountability to Succeed in Everything You Do, by Roger Connors, Tom Smith

Why does the story of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion touch us? Like all great entertainment, their journey resonates. We see ourselves in the characters and likewise wish we possessed the power, the brains, the heart, and the courage to make our own dreams come true.

So what are your dreams? What do you want? Is it a promotion? Improving a relationship? Rescuing a child? Finding a new job? Saving a marriage? Getting a degree? Finding the love of your life? Making a difference in your community? This book will help you get whatever you consider worthwhile in life.

Simply put, when you unleash the power of personal accountability it will energize you in lifealtering ways, giving you a concrete boost that enhances your ability to think, to withstand adversity, to generate confidence, and to increase your own natural emotional, mental, and intellectual strength. Roger Connors and Tom Smith know this because they’ve seen it work in their own lives and witnessed it in the lives of some of the most successful and influential people in the world.

The authors first introduced this powerful accountability philosophy in the New York Times bestseller The Oz Principle. Since then, millions have come to know them as “The Oz Guys” and they have gone on to help leaders all over the world teach and apply the principles you’re about to learn. Principles that have generated billions of dollars of wealth—along with a host of even more important results. Devotees of The Oz Principle have brought lifesaving medications to market, created better education in community colleges, greatly surpassed charity fund-raising goals, and improved medical practices in battlefield hospitals.

In The Wisdom of Oz, Connors and Smith present the practical and powerful principles of personal accountability in simple, down-to-earth terms that you can apply in your homes, schools, communities, churches, and volunteer groups. The book will help you strengthen family relationships, improve friendships, motivate children, increase value on the job, improve health and financial well-being, or achieve whatever it is you most desire.

Drawing on engaging stories about those who have overcome great odds—including South African president Nelson Mandela, Polish WWII hero Irena Sendler, and everyday men and women—Connors and Smith demonstrate that by taking personal ownership of your goals and accepting responsibility for your performance, you also take control of your success.

You will read stories about people just like you who learned to beat their struggles, like the New York area fisherman who fell off his lobster boat and was adrift at sea for twelve hours in the chilly Atlantic . . . but survived. You will learn the traits that allowed a college senior who landed flat on her face in a 600-meter race to jump up and win. Or a thirteen-year-old soccer player who moved from the bench to the starting lineup.

You will discover that while no one will ever wave a wizard’s wand and magically solve all your problems, there is a way to experience the near magical impact of personal accountability.

PREFACE

The Wisdom of Oz is not just a book about the power of personal accountability; it’s a book about what’s at the root of succeeding in everything you do. Simply put, when you unleash the power of personal accountability, it will empower you in life-altering ways. We’re not talking fictional superhero-type powers but about a real, concrete power that enhances your ability to think, to withstand adversity, to generate confidence, and to increase your own natural emotional, mental, and intellectual strength to help you do what you need to do. We know this works because we’ve seen it in our own lives and witnessed it in the lives of countless others.

We first introduced this powerful accountability philosophy in our book The Oz Principle. Since then, millions have come to know us as “the Oz guys.” Over the years we’ve helped leaders all over the world teach and apply the principles you’re about to learn to those they work with, to generate billions of dollars of wealth—along with a host of even more important results. They got better results . . . a lot better results. And with those improvements they were able to dramatically impact their ability to deliver on their missions: such as bringing life-saving medications to market, improving education in community colleges, greatly surpassing charity fund-raising goals, and improving medical practices in battlefield hospitals.

You may not be looking to make any great changes in your life, but you may want to accomplish some great task—at least, a task that seems great to you. If this is the case, unleashing the power of personal accountability can be your best strategy. Our accountability philosophy is all about helping you accomplish what you want or need to do. The Wisdom of Oz will show you how others have done it and how you can do it too.

At the heart of the message lies this one simple truth: You can’t let your circumstances define who you are and what you do. That kind of thinking only brings a sense of victimization that paralyzes your ability to think clearly, creatively, and quickly. Instead, you have to take accountability in order to take charge of shaping your circumstances. Do this and good things, positive things, game-changing things will begin to happen.

Easy to say, maybe harder to do.

Not much there
By Jeff Jolly
Maybe it is because of were I am at in my life but it seemed like the whole book was spent trying to convince you to take responsibility for your feelings. But not much about after you have done that.

Great book on self accountability. Well worth the read
By Joshua Hagan
This is a great book about self accountability and not allowing circumstance or people keep you from moving forward. By and large your future depends on you, this book helps you keep that focus when others may choose to go "below the line." Being below the line is okay, it's just not okay to stay there.

I plan to read this again soon.

Amazon.com Review
One of the most influential vampire novels of the 20th century, I Am Legend regularly appears on the "10 Best" lists of numerous critical studies of the horror genre. As Richard Matheson's third novel, it was first marketed as science fiction (for although written in 1954, the story takes place in a future 1976). A terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears to be immune to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he is the outsider. He is the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different from everyone else. Employing a stark, almost documentary style, Richard Matheson was one of the first writers to convince us that the undead can lurk in a local supermarket freezer as well as a remote Gothic castle. His influence on a generation of bestselling authors--including Stephen King and Dean Koontz--who first read him in their youth is, well, legendary. --Stanley Wiater

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Robert Neville has witnessed the end of the world. The world's population has been obliterated by a vampire virus, though Neville has somehow survived. As he toils to make sense of it all and protect himself against the hounding vampires who seek out his life force, Neville embarks on a series of projects to discover the source of the plague and hopefully put an end to the vampires. In a tale that plays with the slippery slope of sanity, Dean makes the perfect choice for a narrator. His powerful performance proves chilling and haunting. As Neville teeters on the edge of sanity, Dean manipulates his tone, speed, emphasis and projection accordingly, making listeners tremble with his narration. While some might rebuke his narration for being too dramatic or providing too much interpretation, Dean's intensity adds to the book in a way that benefits listeners over readers. The visceral nature of his performance evokes the image of a foamy-mouthed Dean growling at a microphone with spittle flying. A Tor paperback. (Oct.)

I Am Legend is a classic horror story. Some regard it as THE classic horror story. Influencing great modern horror writers like Stephen King, it's one that will stick with you. I still remember the exact moment I started and finished this book nearly 10 years ago. I was sitting shotgun while my father drove us home from a vacation in Michigan. The AC was too high and I was freezing but couldn't bare to pull my eyes away from this story long enough to ask him to turn it down.

I was delighted that I could find a Non-Will Smith cover for this book. As many people know, this story has been adapted into 3 or 4 movies over the years. Word of warning, this is different from the Will Smith movie. If the movie was a standalone with a different name, I would have liked it more. As an adaptation of the book, the movie is seriously lacking.

Differences like the fact that the vampires can talk make this story more compelling as the last man on earth isn't alone. This is one of my favorite books of all time.

Pros:
If you've seen the movie, you can still read the book and be very enthralled. Different enough where you won't know the twists.
Great writing. This book made me want to become an author when I was little.
Can't say too much more as I don't want to give anything away.

Cons:
Be careful to purchase the correct copy if you're avoiding the Will Smith movie cover print.
The sticker on the back of mine was sticky enough that now, once removed, my book sticks to everything. That's my biggest complaint people. Back of the book is a little sticky. Seriously. Buy this!

I enjoyed both films greatly
By Books, Vertigo and Tea
I Am Legend has been on my list for years. I am not sure why I let it go for as long as I have. I enjoyed both films greatly, although I hold a particular fondness for Omega Man (1971) with Heston. I feel it holds a bit truer to the actual book, but there are a few more adaptations in existence (so I am told).

I Am Legend follows protagonist Robert Neville after a plague has swept through, claiming the entirety of mankind and leaving nothing but vampiric beings in its wake. It is the end of times. Yet somehow, Neville remains. Alone and outnumbered, he must fight for survival and try to establish a life of solitude.

I want to note that for a brief portion of this story I actually listened to the audio book narrated by Robertson Dean. I can safely recommend it, as I found the narrator’s tone to be reminiscent of the actual film, Omega Man. It was nostalgic. So If you are in search a shorter audio book, this might be an ideal option. You could certainly knock this one off of your TBR in a matter of hours.

Where to start? This is a brilliant read! Cleverly disguised as your run-of-the-mill science fiction, I Am Legend delivers a reading experience that goes well beyond the expected. This is not just a mere story of a virus and mankind’s end. This is a keen observation of humanity through the eyes of one desperate and desolate human being.

“He stood there for a moment looking around the silent room, shaking his head slowly. All these books, he thought, the residue of a planet’s intellect, the scrapings of futile minds, the leftovers, the potpourri of artifacts that had no power to save men from perishing.”

Our main character is everything you would come to expect him to be. He is angry. He is despairing. And he is forever seeking answers and solutions. It is through Neville that we exposed to the horrors of what it is to be the last surviving human. The psychological ramifications are endless, and I feel that the 3rd person narration seen through Neville’s eyes conveys this appropriately with well-timed emotional responses and outburst. The sense of desperation is forever present in his relentless studies and efforts to find a cure, a solution. The loneliness is experienced through his need to reside within his own memories of his wife and a life that was. The added element of his alcoholism and sporadic actions expose his weakness and ineffective coping, reminding us once again that this is more than a science fiction story.

The writing is very impressive when you take into account that I Am Legend was originally published in 1954 and set with a futuristic Los Angeles during 1976. While the pace is somewhat slow, it is consistent and aids well in setting the atmosphere. I feel that it was a brazen decision on the author’s part to create a single character and leave him to his own devices while providing the reader with limited insight through the chosen narration. It is easy to see why this book has influenced multiple films. By the time you have completed Neville’s journey, I Am Legend will evoke a different type of fear that is very human and very real.

“Full circle. A new terror born in death, a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend.”

This is an ideal read for fans of the films, post apocalyptic settings and titles that take an abstract approach to exploring humanity. I found this to be a very solid first encounter with Matheson’s work, and it will certainly not be the end of the line in this new relationship. I walked away from I Am Legend with a real sense of why he is such a prolific name in science fiction.

An interesting twist on the classic vampire story
By Jamie
First and foremost, this isn’t a novel about vampires so much as it is a novel about loneliness. Robert Neville is isolated for years without any outside contact as the vampire hoard lurked outside his door. The shifts in his mood between apathy, anger, depression, desperate hope, and at times seeming madness and cruelty made his character feel real and believable. The chapter about the dog was so human it was painful.

I thought that Neville’s exploration and experimentation in order to understand what the vampires were exactly and how the world was taken so swiftly was interesting. I appreciated the scientific elements that tried to explain well established tropes about vampires, either explaining how they could be possible or separating the ones that were no more than superstition. Many of the assumptions made in the novel were actually reasonable. The experiments that he carried out on those afflicted with vampirism, both alive and dead, made him a monster. The glee with which he executed or experimented on vampires showed his devolution from human to something else.

This is where the novel hits kind of a tail spin. I get where the author is going with the evolution of humanity and how moral Neville’s thirst for knowledge and understanding was, but I feel like the novel got a little bit contrived around the end. Most of the novel was spent wondering where it was going, seeming just a bit confused and lacking any real direction. This made the second half of the novel feel forced and left me feeling like I had whiplash.

Even so, I Am Legend stands as a classic because it was influential in the development of the zombie genre and the concept of a world wide apocalypse caused by the spread of disease and I can completely understand why. Even though the affliction is officially branded vampirism and explains vampire lore, the creatures in the novel are different from the types of vampires one is used to from other works of fiction and I found it refreshing.

The Ritual Lament in Greek Tradition, 2nd Edition (Greek Studies), by Margaret Alexiou

Margaret Alexiou's The Ritual Lament in Greek Tradition, first published in 1974, has long since been established as a classic in several fields. This is the only generic and diachronic study of learned and popular lament and its socio-cultural contexts throughout Greek tradition in which a great diversity of sources are integrated to offer a comprehensive and penetrating synthesis. Its interdisciplinary orientation and broad scope have rendered The Ritual Lament in Greek Tradition an indispensable reference work for classicists, byzantinists, neohellenists, folklorists, and anthropologists. Now a second edition, revised by Dimitrios Yatromanolakis and Panagiotis Roilos, has been made available. This new edition also includes a valuable up-to-date bibliography on ritual lament and death in Greek culture.

Better for All the World: The Secret History of Forced Sterilization and America's Quest for Racial Purity, by Harry Bruinius

A timely and gripping history of the controversial eugenics movement in America–and the scientists, social reformers and progressives who supported it.In Better for All the World, Harry Bruinius charts the little known history of eugenics in America–a movement that began in the early twentieth century and resulted in the forced sterilization of more than 65,000 people. Bruinius tells the stories of Emma and Carrie Buck, two women trapped in poverty who became the test case in the 1927 supreme court decision allowing forced sterilization for those deemed unfit to procreate. From the reformers who turned local charities into government-run welfare systems promoting social and moral purity, to the influence the American policies had on Nazi Germany’s development of “racial hygiene,” Bruinius masterfully exposes the players and legislation behind one of America’s darkest secrets.

From Publishers Weekly
In the early years of the 20th century, a fixation on eugenics led several states to approve forced sterilization to keep thousands of Americans from producing "morally inferior" or "feeble-minded" offspring. Bruinius's greatest accomplishment in his retelling of this blot on our nation's history is forcing readers to recognize the humanity of the victims of these policies. He begins with Carrie Buck, a young Virginia woman used by state medical authorities as a test case to get the courts to legitimize their program. At times, Bruinius's account of the events leading up to her sterilization employs a novelistic level of detail, such as recreating the mental state of participants, a technique also applied to discussing the lives of the scientists whose theories drove the eugenics movement. (These stories have their bittersweet ironies; one leading eugenicist was an epileptic, while another's daughter showed signs of dyslexia.) The tone occasionally slips into excessive moralizing when he underscores the relationship between American eugenics and Nazi Germany, but the connections are certainly there. This history isn't as "secret" as the title makes it out to be—it's been told most recently by Edwin Black in War Against the Weak—but Bruinius brings compelling drama to the narrative that should give it broad appeal. From The New Yorker
In 1927, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of sterilizing a twenty-one-year-old woman thought to be "feebleminded," and Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote for the majority, "It is better for all the world, if . . . society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind." This precedent led to the escalation of eugenics in the United States, and the coercive sterilization of more than sixty-five thousand people (many of whom were poor women). Bruinius deftly combines analysis of how the American quest for moral and social purity prepared people to accept pseudo-science as a basis for national policy with an account of the personal and intellectual development of eugenics' most influential American advocates—Charles Davenport and Harry Laughlin. Both from religious families, they wanted to "retranslate" Puritan ethics into scientific practice, and aimed at "tracing the genetic roots of 'sin.' "

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Bruinius' account of one of America's dirty little secrets is that rare thing for nonfiction, a real page-turner. From the moment he begins telling the story of Carrie Buck, who at 21 underwent forced sterilization at the hands of Dr. John H. Bell at the Virginia Colony for Epileptics and the Feebleminded in 1927, to the moment he concludes the forced sterilization story of a woman known as Lucille in 1942, it is hard to put the book down. Compelling as the anecdotes he relays are, Bruinius supplements them with well-documented quotations, hard data, and the legal and legislative records of how 30 states implemented forced sterilization; how the U.S. Supreme Court, with landmark liberal justice Oliver Wendell Holmes in the majority, upheld forced sterilization in a decision that has not been overturned; how Nazi Germany's eugenics laws were modeled on those in the U.S.; and how more than 65,000 people, mostly women, were sterilized against their will in the U.S. until as recently as the 1970s. He outlines how the notion of American ethnic purity and the quasi science of eugenics combined to spawn dangerous, dehumanizing practices and how the threat of resurgent involuntary sterilization looms when the concepts of inalienable rights and human dignity encounter "Darwinian reductionism and the myth of human progress." Eugenics was a protestant, jewish, left & feminist's business
By Dalton C. Rocha
I read this book, here in Brazil. This book is easy to read.Compared to "War against the weak" by Edwin Black, this book is smaller and a little better.
To example, while "War against the weak" didn't told that the famous american eugenicist Charles B. Davenport hadn't any grandson, this book shows that even having two daughters, both of his daughters had no child.
Even so, this book repeats many of the same mistakes made by Edwin Black's book "War against the weak".Some examples of these same mistakes are:
1-Even showing , about eugenics, the right way of catholics and the wrong way by protestants and jews, this book doesn't tells why among eugenics, religion decided so many.Support of eugenics was almost universal among famous jews and protestants in USA; at least until when Hitler came to power, in 1933.At the same times, Roman Catholic Church was eugenics' number one foe in USA.This book didn't tells that while Roman Catholicism had (and has) a Pope, protestants and jews were "following the bible", when they supported the eugenics.Such as happened during witch-hunting and slavery's times, many famous and powerfull people found on bible, support for eugenics. At the same times, there was not just one eugenics, even in USA there was hundreds of eugenics, while having tens of judaisms and hundreds of protestantisms.Jews and protestants saw on eugenics, such as a a mirror of his own religious believes.Only the opposition from Pope, priests and bishops didn't explained why eugenics was ever a failure, among catholic countries.Divorce existed in France and Italy, since XIX Century (both more than 90% catholics at eugenics's time).Eugenics was a godless religion, having many sects, even in USA.
2-Such as on Edwin Black's book, this book has too many space, about both Dr. Laughlin and Charles B. Davenport. They were both neurothic and crooks, but they were following orders from rich and powerfull americans; many of them jews. When in Hitler's times(1933-1945), they became useless both went to fame to nothing in a few years.About Laughlin's family, on page 180, this book writes:"Kirksville was the home of Andrew Taylor Still the visionary healer whose eccentric treatment methods physical manipulations to improve the body's natural functions." on same page 180:"Earl attended the osteopathic college".Well, osteopathy wasn't a type of medicine , but only quackery.Harry Laughlin's family was linked to quackery, but this book forgets this thing.
3-Too many american doctors of both sexes, were among eugenics's leaders. This same happended in every country where eugenics existed.Well, why this happened in USA and all the world?Because medicine was next to useless in eugenics' times.Even so, some decades before eugenics' creation, the doctors had replaced the pastors and religious leaders as God's preachers among people's minds. They were maily useless, but the people wanted something to believe.Having no medicine for the desiases, they told that eugenics was the solution, for medical and social problems in USA and many other protestants countries.
4-The same rich and powerfull americans who gave money, to Lenin, Russian Revolution and Hitler were also famous eugenicists. This book forgets this fact.
5-Feminism in America was deeply linked to eugenics. There's almost nothing about feminism in this book.
6-After World War II, eugneics became "population control" or neo-malthusianism in USA.Just one line of this book is about this very important fact.

This book is better than "War Against the weak" , but it remains a little weak many times.

Gripping and Timely
By Aram Sinnreich
I was absolutely absorbed by this book, which deftly interweaves the story of Eugenics as an abstract idea with the story of its all-too-real progenitors. Far too little is known about the American origins of this racist pseudo-science, and Bruinius manages to tell us all about it without ever sounding preachy or didactic. One of the best non-fiction books I've read in years, and a potent warning to those who would place too much faith in either science or ideology -- at the expense of real human lives.

Terrible Kindle edition
By Amazon Customer
This is a TERRIBLE book to get on Kindle. I've gotten numerous Kindle textbooks in the past with no qualms whatsoever. This book? It looks like a drunk monkey created the Kindle edition. The table of contents alone is ridiculous. They couldn't be bothered to even create titles that didn't run off the line or use spacing. The ToC is super hard to navigate just because you can't read it. They don't use page numbers either so you'll never be able to find anything. This is by far my worst Kindle purchase ever.

I can't comment on the quality of the book itself because I can't get past how terrible it is on Kindle.

Useful and beneficial
By sandy tsoi
I'm a psychology major, and this book has met my needs for my class, am in love with this book and I can see myself using this and reading this for years to come. I might even use it as a bed time book. Facinating stuff. What a wise investment.

Great Book
By Brenda
I ordered this book for my Psychology summer class and it was sent in good hardcover condition, all pages were available and not one single mark was on any of the pages. It almost looked like it was almost new except it didn't have the smell of being new. I hate renting books with marks and torn pages but this book didn't have anything like that. I really enjoyed reading this book and learn many things from it. Although it was kind of heavy in my backpack.
