Over the last 25 years, Gunther Zupanc has acquired intensive research and teaching experience in the following four academic systems: the American system through his graduate study and postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Diego (1987-1992), and numerous research visits; the Canadian system through many research visits and a Visiting Professorship at the University of Ottawa (1994-1997); the German system though his studies in biology and physics at the University of Regensburg (1979-1987), as well as his work as a Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tubingen (1992-1997); and the British system, as a Senior Lecturer in Zoology at the University of Manchester from 1997 to 2002. A practical, common-sense, approach to chess.

I purchased this book after having attended some seminars where I was able to hear GM Hansen first-hand. The book is practically like getting a transcript of four of his sessions, with the only downside being that you can't ask him questions as you read!

GM Hansen has a gift for communicating sophisticated ideas with clarity and simplicity. Far from being a collection of tips, tricks, and "get better quickly" gimmicks, the lessons are designed to teach one how to think better about chess, and how to focus on what is relevant and important.

It is an easy book to read, and I mean that in every possible positive way. I highly recommend it.

Good Exercises

I have yet to finish the book, but the parts that I have read are immediately useful. The exercises are valuable and should be worked on daily in order to foster self-awareness. This is another book I would recommend to those engaged in serious spiritual study as it avoids the new-age fluff and gets down to business.

What we've all been waiting for!

For anyone interested in making a medieval garment, but who doesn't know where to begin: this book is for you.
This book covers everything you ever wanted to know about medieval clothing, from measurements, patterns and materials to methods of construction. It has over 400 illustrations of medieval clothing, and 121 patterns for shirts and smocks, cotes, doublets, kirtles, hose, surcotes, cotehardies, gowns, overkirtles, cloaks, children's clothing, headwear, and accessories.
Current books on the subject of Medieval costume concentrate either on research (with good information on what was worn, but little on how to actually make it) or towards theatrical costume (with information on how to make the items, but dubious historical accuracy.) The Medieval Tailor's Assistant is the best of both worlds, combining solid research and detailed "how-to" information into one volume.
This book is geared more toward the novice or intermediate costumer and sewer than toward the advanced historic costume researcher. As it is not primarily a research work, it doesn't delve into original sources as much as books like Janet Arnold's "Patterns of Fashion." The research which went into it is very good, however, and it gives less experienced historic costumers a splendid place to start.

This is one of the best books for creating patterns, choosing fabrics, editing a pattern for your personal size, as well as a great primer for what to wear that I have seen. Not being an expert in the sewing craft I need a little extra guidance, and this book delivers.
This book first of all does feature a nice area on garments on when they were worn historically. In a simple time line she demonstrates proper fabric choices as well as the styles that were around during those years.
The book is one of the few that features patterns for men, women, children, and even babies. Also included are maturnity patterns, shoes, and some hats. So its great for the variety of patterns it will provide you.
So now that we know what styles are appropriate, what fabric will work, and we can do the basics, the book is kind enough to help you with making your pattern in terms of suggesting great ways to customize patterns for you own body.
This book really sets itself appart with the breadth of patterns it offers, suggestions on how to make your garmets look period by even getting embroidery patterns for buttons, and other finishing stitches, and tells you how to make them look best on you. The book is easy to read, and the illustrations are clean, clear, and concise. A definate one to pick up if you want to create clothes from years past. I would personally jump on this one, as you know some books like this have small print runs, and who knows when you can get your hands on one like this again.

Good Resource

As a medievalist and costumer whose focus is early 14th century England and France, I found this to be a wonderful book and said to myself "FINALLY!" For those looking for instructions on how to move from costuming to making actual clothing, I am certain you will be pleased.
I disagreed with very little within the text and found this to be a very pleasant surprise (although I do disagree quite strongly with the modern draping methods suggested. Highly suspicious for a medieval technique in my opinion).
While I would hesitate to say that all the methods are completely accurate (how could we know this? Some things we do know were not included or were replaced with easier, more modern methods), they are certainly far superior to anything else out there for this time period and place. Well done.
I would stay away from much of the suggested reading on the left side of that page simply because once someone has reached this stage in their costuming development they have grown out of Houston etc... with the exception of Newton's Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince (this is worth the price for certain).
The Museum of London books and the book on Queen Margareta's gown on the right side of the selected reading page are worth every penny however.
I think it was worth the $... and that we are soon to see a sudden surge of truly medieval looking clothing in our living history groups and I am all for that. 100%

Christians and Muslims can both learn from this book

Unless they study comparative religion, most Christians are unaware that Jesus and Mary feature in Islam. They may also assume that Christians have always believed in the theology of Roman Catholicism and Protestantism: belief in the Trinity and salvation by the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. All of these assumptions are incorrect.

The book starts with a historical account of Jesus and the early Christians. It discusses the relationship of St Paul with the disciples and the radical changes that St Paul made to the practices taught by Jesus. It then covers the theological disagreements between early Christians and how belief developed that a place in heaven came from redemption through the sacrifice of Jesus and not from living a good life in accordance with the laws of God as taught by Moses, the other prophets and Jesus. The book explains how the arguments between the early Christians were resolved through the exercise of state power by the Roman Empire at the Council of Nicaea. It also covers how the text of the New Testament was decided and two books excluded from it, The Gospel of Barnabas and The Shepherd of Hermas.

Although well worth reading, the book could be improved. In this 1996 edition, Ahmad Thomson adds to the original written 1977 text of Muhammad `Ata'ur-Rahim. However the early part of the book contains some imperfect English, presumably because `Ata'ur-Rahim was not a native English speaker. There is extensive coverage of the history of Unitarianism in the middle of the second millennium which is interesting to read but not relevant to the title of the book. There is also no need to reprint verbatim all of the verses in the Quran which mention Jesus since they are readily available elsewhere. Instead the book should concentrate on the key Islamic messages and provide the Quranic authority for them; the same applies to the chapter on Hadith which mention Jesus. Overall, it would be a much better book if the length was reduced to about 50%-75% of the current version by rigorous editing.

Muslim "scholarship" at its worst

"Jesus, Prophet of Islam" is an excellent example of just how un-level the playing field is between so-called Islamic scholarship on Christianity and Christian scholarship on Islam. A Christian scholar is expected to have major university degrees in Islamics and Arab history, as well as a solid working knowledge of Arabic. A Muslim scholar has no such expectations; it is sufficient that he references biblical texts and then lays on his interpretation of them based solely on Islamic teaching.

Any Christian scholar claiming that the Qur'an is a forgery that is completely divorced from the true teaching of Muhammad would be shown the door by every academic institution in the West. Ur-Rahim, however, can assert that the Bible is a forgery (3500 years of Jewish history, and nearly 100 years of Christian history) and be presented as a daring, dispassionate and thoughtful scholar!

This is utter nonsense. There is not a single shred of evidence to support the supposed forgery of either the Old or the New Testaments. More important, there is not a shred of evidence that the Apostle Paul led a European Trinitarian movement in opposition to a Peter-led Semitic Unitarian movement. One reading of Peter's final letter to the churches he pastored (and probably founded) in the Black Sea (Pontic) and central Anatolian region of what is today Turkey puts the lie to Ur-Rahim's central thesis.

Peter writes, regarding the letters of Paul which are part of the New Testament record, "Remember, our Lord's patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him—speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, JUST AS THEY DO WITH OTHER PARTS OF SCRIPTURE."

So, Peter the Unitarian (according to Ur-Rahim) blesses the writings of Paul the Trinitarian (as defined by Ur-Rahim) and declares those writings to be scripture (on the same level of authority as Genesis, Isaiah, Psalms, and the other 36 books of the Jewish canon).

Read Ur-Rahim if you wish to see the lies Islam uses to discredit the Christian scriptures. But if you want to see what the Bible really says, read the Bible and let it stand or fall on the strength its own testimony.

This is truly an amazing account of how Christianity, which was essentially a monothiestic religion, preached by Jesus son of Maryam, came to include such things as Trinity and Original Sin etc. You'll learn how much common ground there is between Islam and Christianity and how much Muslims honor Jesus son of Maryam (peace be upon him).

Very nice book

This is a very nice book. The pages are in color and thick. There are many puzzles on each page and great descriptions in the back on how the solutions are found. PLEASE NOTE: this is not a puzzle book of crosswords, suduko, mazes, logic problems or wordplay. These are brainteasers only. I didn't realize this when I bought it but I bought The Total Brain Workout as well, which has the usual puzzles in it so now I have everything I need!

AN EXCELLENT WAY TO TRAIN YOU'RE MIND TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX IN ALL COMMON SITUATIONS. I WAS INSPIRED TO BUY THIS BOOK AFTER WATCHING THE TV SHOW [FRINGE] BECAUSE IT WAS SO FASCINATING TO WATCH HOW EXPANDING THE MIND CAN WORK. AFTER JUST ONE WEEK OF PLAYING THE GAMES IN THIS BOOK, I BEGAN TO WORK OUT PROBLEMS...(ex. math,misplaced items) IN MY HEAD FASTER THAN BEFORE. IT'S A CLASSROOM IN A BOOK. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE FOR ALL AGES.

"Playing" with math riddles has always been one of my 'things'; I have decided to buy the book initially only because of the last name of the author: in college, I have learned statistics and probability from a professor that studied mathematics in Moscow with dr. Moscovich; probably just a fortunate match, but nevertheless...
I have found the book most challenging, and a good way to keep me on my toes, so to speak!
