This history of black fraternities and sororities confirms the underlying purpose of these institutions: to provide a supportive educational environment for their members during college and social and business networks beyond college. Ross notes the substantial variation on the specific circumstances behind the formation of black fraternities and sororities. For example, Alpha Phi Alpha was formed at Cornell University just after the turn of the last century to counterbalance extreme racial hostilities aimed at the few black students. Shortly thereafter, in the more protective environment of predominantly black Howard University, Omega Psi Phi was formed. More recently (1963), older commuter students at Morgan State formed Iota Phi Theta. The underlying theme in all cases was camaraderie with a special emphasis on providing support to minorities in hostile environments, whether on campus or the broader racial environment of the U.S. Ross profiles several members of black fraternities and sororities, many of them prominent, and notes the contributions the groups have made to black leadership in the U.S. Vernon Ford

The book takes a brief and some times detailed look at the Divine Nine fraternities and sororities and other prominent African-American social clubs. It's a good read if you're interested in black greek life and want to know the origin and past achievements of each one.

I think this book a good introduction into the organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). I will admit it appeared as if there was a biased towards some of the organizations in the way they were presented. Overall, I think it's a good book for anyone to learn more about the NPHC, and I recommend it!

About the Author
Bruce Block has worked in a creative capacity on dozens of feature films, television shows commercials and animated films. His feature film producing credits include Something's Gotta Give, What Women Want, America's Sweethearts, The Parent Trap, and Father of the Bride I & II. He served as creative consultant on Spanglish, As Good As It Gets, Stuart Little and many other feature films and television productions. A Unique, Must-Have Book for Filmmakers

I teach a class called "Story" at Los Angeles Film School and this book is on my Recommend Reading List for all students but I especially tout it to cinematography, production design and directing majors. There are many books that talk about the basics (shot size, 180 degree rule, etc.) but if you want to go beyond that to find out what kinds of choices the great filmmakers make and why, this is the book with the answers.

One thing young filmmakers and students often fail to understand about the auteurs and master directors is that they base their shots on what serves the story, not the fact that the shot "looks cool." I love the fact that author Bruce Block talks so much about the need for the visuals to follow and reflect the ups and downs of the underlying story structure. I also love the fact that that he takes film theory and shows the filmmaker how to apply it. Ordinarily, film theory and film practice are two separate worlds.

I never thought I'd find a film book I liked better than the first edition of "The Visual Story," but now I have: It's the 2nd edition, which has a bigger, easier-to-read format, many more color illustrations and more, updated examples. The students who've taken my advice and read this book are blown away by it. I believe it should be mandatory reading for anyone who is in the film business or who hopes to be.

Groundbreaking, A Must-Have

I have a large library of filmmaking books but this is one I would probably grab if the place caught on fire. It really makes you think about the visuals of your film and could have been called Visual Design for Filmmaking. It has very helpful illustrations and you can tell he put a lot of thought into what he is saying. The only other books I would recommend are Cinematography by Brown, Sight Sound Motion by Zettl, and The Filmmaker's Eye. And those are pretty much all you need to know, imho.

About the Author
Dr Steve Killops has been active in the field of organic geochemistry for some 20 years, in both academic and commercial sectors. He is currently a consultant petroleum geochemist.

Vanessa Killops is a geologist and organic geochemist and has worked in petroleum exploration. She has also worked in New Zealand at the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences as a contract geological scientist and in the UK on a consultancy basis.

Isobel Sinclair emerges from mourning her husband's death with a plan: she wants to create her own family by having a baby. Her husband's best friend, the wealthy and influential Rafael Sanchez, is the only available man in her life, and attraction between them isn't a problem. Besides, her heart will always belong to Gary, so it's not like she wants a commitment.

Meanwhile, Rafe isn't a settle-down-with-a-family type. He has new women in and out of his life every few weeks. He's had his eye on his best friend's wife for a long time, but loyalty to Gary meant never laying a finger on Bella. Now, even with Gary gone, Rafe can't bring himself to bridge that gap. He also can't imagine letting Bella have a baby with any random stranger.

She's loved Rafe for a long time, and something about him sparks a heat inside her that Gary's steady, patient love --- while wonderful --- didn't.

Rafe, on the other hand, remains determined not to give in to what Bella wants, since he knows that to have children with her would only be to invite heartbreak, given his own family history. Still, terrified of losing her and the friendship he so carefully cultivated with her, he deceives her into believing he'll give her a baby.

Deception can't be condoned in ninety-five percent of circumstances, of course, but readers will understand Rafe's uncertainty and feel for his situation. He's obligated to protect Bella, even from herself and even from him, for Gary's sake. He desperately wants Bella but can't give her a baby. That kind of psychological chaos is ripe with tension and makes for a really compelling character.

The heat level in this contemporary romance is somewhere between smoky and singed. Readers will find the attraction between Bella and Rafe, and their subsequent ventures in bed, one of the most satisfying parts of the book.

Fast-paced and emotionally-satisfying! I loved this book, and it's characters!

The Spaniard's Kiss is a fast-paced and emotionally-satisfying new contemporary romance by Nina Croft that deals with the unrequited, somewhat forbidden, love between two friends who unexpectedly find themselves exploring and wondering about the possibility of being more. The hero, Rafe, has wanted Bella for years, but he's kept his feelings hidden because of her marriage to his late best friend. Now that his friend is dead, Rafe wants Bella more than ever before, but in his mind, Bella is still off-limits because he doesn't want to lose her.

I really enjoyed this book a lot because it didn't take the route I expected given the story elements and the book's summary. It was a quick, easy, well-written read and even though the story elements will be familiar to most romance readers, the setting and the characters themselves make it fresh, and keep the story interesting. I highly recommend checking this one out. It's a terrific read, and one that might just surprise you, too.

I received an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review.

Now this is the way to write a romance! Take two interesting characters, Bella, a young widow who miscarried the baby she was carrying a week after her husband's untimely death, and Rafe, her late husband's best friend. Add the fact that Rafe has secretly been in love with his best friend's wife for years. Add Bella's desire for a child, a home and a family, and her decision to ask Rafe to father her child.Finally, add the mystery of why Rafe keeps denying that he'll even marry and father a child, you have the makings of one gripping romance novel.

I've not read this author before, but will gladly do so again. Good job!

Rick Sturdivant earned a M.S.E.E. from UCLA and has been president of Microwave Products and Technology, Inc. for the last 12 years. His technical interests are in electronic packaging, transmit/receive modules, and phased arrays. Mike Harris earned a M.S. in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Hedeveloped semiconductor processes for GaAs PHEMTs and GaN HEMTs and has been involved in T/Rmodule programs for over 25 years. He is retired, but continues to teach a professional education course on T/R Modules for Phased Array Radar.

Thorough treatment in practical terms

Systems that use TR modules are presented starting from the antenna arrays and continuing through TR module performance, to construction methods and materials. It also has a good discussion of testing methods. The book has excellent references for those looking deeper into specific design considerations. This book would be useful introduction to TR modules for engineers working in related areas and for system engineers. Problems in each chapter focus students on the material covered.

How to create a demand-creating culture

Many books published in recent years offer excellent advice on how to create and then sustain what I call a hyphenated culture: quality-driven, customer-driven, innovation-driven, results-driven, etc. The given objectives are eminently worthy and I have no quarrel with any of them, nor does Adrian Slywotzky. The fact remains, however, that an organization must have compelling appeal to those on whom it depends for success: employees at all levels and in all areas with talent and skills as well as character and commitment who create great value for customers. That's precisely what Herb Kelleher always stressed when asked to explain the extraordinary success of Southwest Airlines: "We take great care of our people, our people take great care of our customers, and our customers then take great care of our shareholders."

Demand: Creating What People Love Before They Know They Want It is a "must read" for business leaders in organizations that are struggling to answer any/all of questions such as these:

o "How can we get our customers to buy more of what we sell?"
o "How can we convince more of our competition's customers to buy from us?"
o "How can we convert fence-sitters into buyers of what we sell?"
o "How can we attract, hire, and then retain the people who will create the greatest value for our customers?"
o "Meanwhile, what must we do each day to improve the quality of life in our workplace and increase the appeal of what we produce there?"

In each instance, the challenge is to create and then sustain demand.

Whatever its size and nature may be, every organization must be led by what Slywotzky characterizes as "demand creators," people who "spend all of their time trying to understand [begin italics] people [end italics]...They try to understand our aspirations, what we need, what we hate, what gives us emotional charge - and, most important, what we might really love...They seem to know what we want even before we do. They wind up creating things people can't resist and competitors can't copy. Yet they almost never succeed on the first try...These demand creators recognize the huge gaps between what people buy and what they really want - and they use those gaps as the springboard for a process of reimagination that you might call the demand way of thinking."

There are hundreds (thousands?) of books now on sale that offer advice on how to increase sales, how to market with "a bigger bang for the buck," how to improve customer relations, etc. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first book - certainly one that is most cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective - to explain "how to create what people love before they know they want it." Dozens of real-world examples are provided to illustrate key points. They also suggest all manner of practical applications. It should also be noted that the wealth of information, insights, and recommendations that Slywotzky provides are relevant to almost any organization, whatever its size and nature may be. Moreover, after reading and then (preferably) re-reading this book, almost anyone can become a highly effective demand creator.

As Slywotzky explains, "Demand creators have a hidden advantage. Many of their rivals are `anti-demand' organizations - organized in disconnected silos. Focused on meeting yesterday's demand, and often remarkably immune to the signals that customer behavior is trying to send us...Great demand creators are special, in part, because they understand that the things we buy and the things we actually [begin italics] want [end italics] aren't always the same...[begin italics] Great demand creators eliminate or reduce the hassles that make most [products and services inconvenient, costly, unpleasant, and frustrating [end italics]." With relatively minor modifications, these attributes of demand thinking insofar as marketing and customer relationships are concerned could also be said of recruiting, hiring, and training the talent needed as well as of creating what Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba characterize as "customer evangelists." It is no coincidence that employees of the most highly admired organizations, "the best to work for," are also their evangelists and refer to themselves as such.

Adrian Slywotzky has written a book in which all this is explained so well that the reader is well-prepared to become an effective demand creator. Then, after reading this book, I think that one of the first tasks at hand is to convince one's associates to develop a sense of urgency about knowing whatever is required to help create "what people love before they know they want it." Demand creators cannot do that alone. They build and excite great teams that effectively reach thousands or millions of customers. And by doing so, they seem to have a lot more fun in their business than many of their rivals do. Meanwhile, highly-valued workers do not leave; on the contrary, they are among the primary reasons why other peak performers and high potentials are eager to work with them.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! Never in a million years did I think that I'd be so captivated by a Business Book.

But is it a business book?

Who cares!

I was RIVETED by the unique storytelling of the histories of systems that are so integral to our lives - Netflix, Zipcar, Teach for America - as well as those that should be - CareMore, Symphony Concerts, Tetrapak. (I'm desperate to keep a brick of milk in the cabinet so that I never again have a breakfast crisis - for what is coffee and cereal without milk?)

Reading Demand has given me a new perspective on the world around me. I am a more informed and engaged citizen of the world. Thank you, Demand!
