I am a retired academic. I've read a ton of literature on retirement planning (both concerning accumulation and decumulation) and I am happy to say, speaking as a retiree, that this book is by far among the two best (Jim Otar's book being the other), especially as it addresses the much-ignored topic of transitioning from accumulation to decumulation.

Whether in the accumulation or decumulation phase of retirement planning, get this book and use it to review your investment plan on an annual basis.

sensible approach to retirement finance by first constructing "flooring"

a really useful overview of a sensible approach to retirement finance. uses a model of "flooring"- i.e. secure funding for basic needs via a bond ladder and/or annuities. the discussion of flooring [as opposed to "buckets" or other models of portfolio] is the biggest and most important part of the book. if you have the resources, of course, you can build a superstructure on top of your floor. i'm not there yet myself, but for now my plan is flooring with social security and fixed annuities [escalating annuities are overpriced imo], along with other portfolio investments to protect from inflation.

update 5/16- this book definitely influenced my decision to buy some single premium fixed immediate annuities to combine with social security as my "flooring." [i still think escalating and indexed annuities are overpriced. find some quotes and use an online calculator to see how long it takes for escalating payouts to do you any good, and how much more it would cost to get the kind of payouts available from straight fixed annuities. then, too, heavy fees are a problem with more complicated annuities than the kind i bought.]

i am managing the rest of my retirement funds with inflation protection in mind, as the real purchasing power of the fixed annuities will decline with time. the fixed annuity pays out a far higher percentage [6%] than i could ever safely draw from a self managed portfolio which would not benefit from mortality credits. this is especially true in our current environment of high pe's in equities and historically low interest rates. in this environment people don't talk about a "4% rule," they talk about a "2-3% rule."

you do not have to get caught in the false insurance VERSUS investment conflict. you can use insurance products like annuities AND investments to get the benefits of both. anyway, i recommend this book if you're thinking about how to organize your finances heading into retirement.

Excellent book

I am just a regular investor. I wanted to study more about setting up a retirement income stream and to build a safety floor for that income. This book answered all of my questions. Highly recommend it. It's an easy read for anyone with some basic skills.
Edit: Now that I've had time to soak everything I've learned, all the books I read helped me, but this book at the end helped me to put it all together and was the most influential in figuring out my retirement withdrawal setup.

Philip Keller is a master at sharing his joy in walking with God and finding God to be the delight of his life. His life stories are very inspiring and draw the reader into desiring a deeper personal relationship with the eternal God.

Scary, Manipulating and WOW!!!

Wow, this is one of those dark romances where you sit back and rejoice that you didn't go to these characters' school. It is as fascinating to watch as a train wreck with just the same awful outcome; messed up lives. While similar to Beautiful Disaster in messed up relationships, this one has an even harder edge to it with the intimidation, sex/alcohol and manipulation that destroys lives.

Brothers Mason and Logan are the local gods who are gorgeous, rich and their public high school's football stars. They are also a&&holes, man-whores and very scary. Samantha meets them when her mother moves them into her new boyfriend's mansion and Mason and Logan become her future step-brothers. At first they just ignore Samantha, which is fine with her, but then one of them becomes intrigued by her and she becomes powerful by association. Samantha's life has left her numb to the world and she escapes feeling anything by running for hours. Her mother cheated on her father, Sam's boyfriend cheated on her for two years with her best friend, Jessica and her other best friend, Lydia, knew about it the whole time and never told her. Now she lives with the intimidating hell-boys who throw wild parties and have casual sex with every beautiful girl from her private school.

The boys become very protective of Sam after seeing how she handles her cheating boyfriend, old friends and gossip. She just doesn't care about any of it. Mason is the quiet manipulative fighter and Logan is the slightly unstable, smooth talker who demeans others with his words and then his fists. He is a loyal follower of his brother and both are extremely dangerous. Sam finds herself unexplainably attracted to one of them and is put under his spell - literally she can't think on her own when he is around.

There is so much cheating going on in this book that I am amazed that no one got killed. Both Sam's parents and Mason's parents have cheated on each other, all the girls at Sam's school have cheated on their boyfriends there with the hot brothers and Logan's one and only love tried to cheat on him. How any of these kids will ever have a functional marriage or love life is a mystery. EVERYONE is MESSED UP in this book.

So if you like that sort of dark drama, the writing is really good and keeps the pages turning. You just can't help wanting to know what these screwed up kids will do next. There are fist fights, detailed sex, lots of drinking (teen and adult alcoholism) and dysfunction galore. In a lot of ways this reminds me of Molly Owens's book Messed Up which you HAVE to read if you like this dark type of fiction.

Innovative and AWESOME!

Don't judge a book by its cover. That was my lesson here. This was on my "Recommended" list from Amazon, since I love YA romances. I thought the cover was okay, and the title was a simplistic. But, I was slightly intrigued by the synopsis, and hell, it was only $.99, so I bought it. I wasn't expecting any depth. Boy, was I wrong!

This story is very edgy. There were times when I wasn't sure if I liked what was happening, but I couldn't put it down. The characters have so much back story and their own individual struggles, that I wondered how the author did such a good job having so much going on without detracting from the romance. This book is not convential. And I use the word "romance" lightly. The characters don't seem to have much sentiment going on between them for a long time. Heck, it takes them like 10 chapters before they even speak to eachother! The romance unfolds slowly, but the lust was always there.

I felt weird about the heavy drinking, the promisuous sex, the criminal activity, and the sex before love going on, but what makes this a great read is that I want to read it all the time, and I think about it when I'm not reading it.

I don't know what the author has planned for the sequel, but so far they've released the first three chapters online for free. If you Google "Fallen Crest Public", you can read the chapters on [...]. But I would just google it, so you get a direct link.

Guilty Pleasure Read

Holly Hell! Why did I not know about this book until this year...Fallen Crest High was just so damn good. There was so much unbelievably messed up and just downright screwed up s***happening which might normally make me dnf a book but call it a guilty pleasure read because I couldn't get enough of it. I loved Mason, Samantha and Logan.

From the way the blurb is set up I thought it was going to be some love triangle between the brothers and Samantha but that wasn't the case so don't let that stop you from reading it. Mason was so intense and a total alpha male for all you romance readers you know the type...in other words he was as swoon worthy as they get. Samantha....Sam is pretty awesome too. She isn't the easiest person to get along with but with a bitch of a mother like hers I don't blame her and I actually loved her. She has a lot of crap going on in her life, even her friends are pieces of s***and Mason was just what she needed. Now moving on to Logan, he is such an ass but somehow I found myself really liking him....(like I said guilty pleasure read) but he had a couple of good qualities too when you dig deep way deep in there somewhere. I need to see if there is a book about him.

The funny thing is it's not just the main MC's who have serious issues, the parents and just the adults in general are all so very messed up.

I literally read Fallen Crest High in one sitting I lost a crap load of sleep over it and I don't regret it one bit. This was my first Tijan read and after this I went ahead and added everything else she ever wrote to my tbr pile.

Overall I loved it, very fast paced and I'll be grabbing the second book asap.

Grounded firmly in social history and set in lucid prose, Twice upon a Time refocuses the lens through which we look at fairy tales. The conteuses saw their tales as amusements for sophisticated adults in the salon, not for children. Self-referential, frequently parodic, and set in elaborate frames, their works often criticize the social expectations that determined the lives of women at the court of Louis XIV.

After examining the evolution of the ''Anglo-American'' fairy tale and its place in this variegated history, Harries devotes the rest of her book to recent women writers--A. S. Byatt, Anne Sexton, Angela Carter, and Emma Donoghue among them--who have returned to fairy-tale motifs so as to challenge modern-day gender expectations. A LOVE STORY

I purchased the DVD first. Watched it many, many, many times. It is the best Lesbian Romance film I have seen. There is a story line, and characters are well developed. The on screen chemistry between the lead characters is SO believable, you can FEEL them falling in love. Now, the book. Same story of course, but with more back ground information of the characters. You get to know the characters in more depth. You have a more intimate look into their lives, and how it builds to the two lead characters getting to know one another. Nicole Conn is not only one of the best, if not the best Lesbian Romance film makers of all time, she wrote (if I'm not mistaken) all the scripts for every one of her films. As well as her most intimate documentary look into her life as a Mother of a Micropremie, Nicolas. Girls, if you have seen the film "Elena Undone", and enjoyed it, you really need to buy the book. You will not be sorry.

Very good book

This book was very well done and almost as good as the movie. The movie is pretty intense and the book is even moreso. Lots of good details that fill in the movie; for example, the author goes into good detail about how Barry and Elena met. Also there is more detail on Peyton's life, for example, she suffers from OCD which was hinted at in the movie. And there are quite a few pages in early chapters devoted to Peyton's relationship with her ex Margaret. There's more detail on sweet Tyler and the cute girl Tori and why she sorta lives with them. Love scenes are to die for and are plentiful.

A true romantic...

After watching the film on numerous occasions I was held in thrall by the whole concept of 'Soulemetry'. Having met my 'twin-flame' a few years ago and overcoming a distance of nearly 10,000miles to be with the person, to have an insight to other people's stories, and to realise I am not the only believer in fate was a delight of epic proportions.
Nicole Conn writes and directs with a soul-searing intensity that comes out in her work. Having watched each of her feature films and her documentary Little Man, it's not hard to see that she wears her heart on her sleeve and she is a true romantic.
The novel, Elena Undone, delights the senses and imagination of the readers in a way the feature film can't do, you could easily close your eyes and imagine you are Elena or Peyton, feeling that connection of the soul, feeling the intensity of such a connection.
Within the novel you also get a clearer insight into the relationships the characters have with others around them, Tyler and Lily's relationship is explored in greater detail, showing where his belief in Soulemetry comes from, You see where Tori fits into the family dynamic with Elena, Barry & Nash, Elena's pain at losing a daughter to SID's, Peytons relationship's with Marageret, her cheating ex, and also her Mum, suffering advanced Alzheimers. Depth that isn't shown in the film and cannot be conveyed in the short time frame you have for a movie. Yet both film and novel are very beautiful and show an enormous amount of passion towards the creative process.
I personally couldn't put my book down and read it within two straight sittings, with very little sleep between. There were moments that literally took my breath away and also moments of pure clarity where each word written made sense, having felt the same feelings that were being portrayed.
I would recommend anyone read this or watch the film itself, regardless of the story being about two women, as it's a beautiful love story, showing that true-love isn't just a concept to make multi-millionaires out of Hollywood film moguls. It happens, generally when you least expect it, and often with the person you least expect.
