An interesting read about a crazy Pom

I throughly enjoyed reading Ben's book and getting a glimpse behind the scenes of the best job in the world marketing campaign.

I found the chapters on his Afritrex adventure to be the most fascinating though as it isn't a country that I was particularly interested in visiting. Ben presents a different viewpoint on the country and provides some useful tips on what is needed to take an overland adventure.

Great book, but misleading subtitle

One of the things I dislike about Wiley in Australia is that they often try to angle the book towards the wannabee 4 hour work week crowd. The subtitle - how to make a living from following your dreams - is deceptive. It's a great book and one that I enjoyed. However it's more about Southalls journey as an adventurer then how he leveraged his successes since the Best Job In The World campaign.

Ben Southall was the winner of the original Best Job In The World. It was an innovative campaign and one that he excelled at. Since then, he has worked in digital markting and has a lot of insights to share. This book doesn't share those insights. He does go into detail about his efforts in gaining followers for, and during the campaign. The primary focus on the adventures before, during and after his time in Queensland.

I'm a fan of adventure based travel. I had read about some of his efforts in magazines and enjoyed reading more about the backstory. I think that readers should have clear expectations though before buying this book. If you love adventure based travel then you will thoroughly enjoy this

This history of black fraternities and sororities confirms the underlying purpose of these institutions: to provide a supportive educational environment for their members during college and social and business networks beyond college. Ross notes the substantial variation on the specific circumstances behind the formation of black fraternities and sororities. For example, Alpha Phi Alpha was formed at Cornell University just after the turn of the last century to counterbalance extreme racial hostilities aimed at the few black students. Shortly thereafter, in the more protective environment of predominantly black Howard University, Omega Psi Phi was formed. More recently (1963), older commuter students at Morgan State formed Iota Phi Theta. The underlying theme in all cases was camaraderie with a special emphasis on providing support to minorities in hostile environments, whether on campus or the broader racial environment of the U.S. Ross profiles several members of black fraternities and sororities, many of them prominent, and notes the contributions the groups have made to black leadership in the U.S. Vernon Ford

The book takes a brief and some times detailed look at the Divine Nine fraternities and sororities and other prominent African-American social clubs. It's a good read if you're interested in black greek life and want to know the origin and past achievements of each one.

I think this book a good introduction into the organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). I will admit it appeared as if there was a biased towards some of the organizations in the way they were presented. Overall, I think it's a good book for anyone to learn more about the NPHC, and I recommend it!

About the Author
Bruce Block has worked in a creative capacity on dozens of feature films, television shows commercials and animated films. His feature film producing credits include Something's Gotta Give, What Women Want, America's Sweethearts, The Parent Trap, and Father of the Bride I & II. He served as creative consultant on Spanglish, As Good As It Gets, Stuart Little and many other feature films and television productions. A Unique, Must-Have Book for Filmmakers

I teach a class called "Story" at Los Angeles Film School and this book is on my Recommend Reading List for all students but I especially tout it to cinematography, production design and directing majors. There are many books that talk about the basics (shot size, 180 degree rule, etc.) but if you want to go beyond that to find out what kinds of choices the great filmmakers make and why, this is the book with the answers.

One thing young filmmakers and students often fail to understand about the auteurs and master directors is that they base their shots on what serves the story, not the fact that the shot "looks cool." I love the fact that author Bruce Block talks so much about the need for the visuals to follow and reflect the ups and downs of the underlying story structure. I also love the fact that that he takes film theory and shows the filmmaker how to apply it. Ordinarily, film theory and film practice are two separate worlds.

I never thought I'd find a film book I liked better than the first edition of "The Visual Story," but now I have: It's the 2nd edition, which has a bigger, easier-to-read format, many more color illustrations and more, updated examples. The students who've taken my advice and read this book are blown away by it. I believe it should be mandatory reading for anyone who is in the film business or who hopes to be.

Groundbreaking, A Must-Have

I have a large library of filmmaking books but this is one I would probably grab if the place caught on fire. It really makes you think about the visuals of your film and could have been called Visual Design for Filmmaking. It has very helpful illustrations and you can tell he put a lot of thought into what he is saying. The only other books I would recommend are Cinematography by Brown, Sight Sound Motion by Zettl, and The Filmmaker's Eye. And those are pretty much all you need to know, imho.

About the Author
Dr Steve Killops has been active in the field of organic geochemistry for some 20 years, in both academic and commercial sectors. He is currently a consultant petroleum geochemist.

Vanessa Killops is a geologist and organic geochemist and has worked in petroleum exploration. She has also worked in New Zealand at the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences as a contract geological scientist and in the UK on a consultancy basis.

If you love a mystery with heaps of romance thrown in for good measure, this is the book for you. Rose's French adventure is like a modern fairy-tale, but with all the page-turning twists and turns of the very best thrillers. There's even a real-time blog that readers can link to - a brilliant innovation that adds to the suspense.

Recommended for ages 10-101...

NB. Fortunately there ARE more books from Isabelle Merlin in the pipeline...I've read the first three - Three Wishes, Pop Princess and Cupid's Arrow - and am hoping there's a fourth!
